"I'm a casual labourer on a private owned farm whereas my wife is jobless . So I'm the family's bread winner and we also depend on subsistence farming for food . I received this second transfer just on time to complete the construction of my new house . I spent $180 on 20 iron sheets and $80 on labour for roofing . I just wish you could come and see my new house . The new iron sheets makes my whole compound to look beautiful . I spent $100 on secondary school fees for my son and $70 on 2 goats for rearing . I believe the goats will reproduce and be able to he me cater for most basic needs and school fees when I sell them . I was left with approximately $100 which I spent on maize flour ."

"Owning animals has always been a dream of mine. Unpredictable weather patterns and a lack of funds to buy livestock have been major obstacles for me in my quest to own livestock. In our culture, livestock like goats and cows are highly regarded and used as a gauge of wealth. We exchange essential services, like providing schooling for children, for livestock in exchange for dowries and other payments. When I got my transfers for December, I made the decision to buy a $32 goat with the transfer. The goats will procreate in a few months, and this cycle will continue until I have a large number of goats. I can cash in on such a large number and use the proceeds to pay for the education of my two young children, who attend Ikanga Primary. Getting into the livestock farming business will enable me to help my tailor husband take care of the financial needs of our expanding family."

"In the coming year and beyond, I intend to concentrate on improving the goat rearing, that I started with the transfers. This is a reliable source of income that I currently rely on to support myself. At the moment, I have 4 goats and planning to acquire more with the transfer, Additionally, I intend to purchase proper bedding, as at now, I am using a mat that is not comfortable resulting in experiencing body pains every day after waking up."

"I intend to buy livestock , (a cow and a goat) before the end of April this year . This is because I have seen how beneficial livestock is in times of emergencies and I also want to be like my neighbours who own livestock . I just love livestock keeping . I can also sell them in future and venture into greater investments . I need approximately $300 for this and I intend to raise it fro my grocery shop ."

"I'm a small scale business lady , where by I sell fish and charcoal . My husband is a mason but on casual basis . We both assist each other to fend for our families . On the other hand I practice cattle keeping but on small scale . I spend $180 on 1 cow and $30 on 1 goat . I opted to invest in cattle since they will multiply in future and be beneficial to my family . I have 5 children and 4 of them are in primary school . They had school fees arrears totalling to $120 which I cleared using part of this transfer. My children have been using the traditional beddings which are as good as sleeping on the floor , I spent $100 on a modern new bed and $60 on a mattress , now my children always look forward to having a good rest every night ! We also needed to stock food because that is a basic need yet it was finished in my house , so I took the remaining $60 and bout 2 bales of maize flour and 25kgs of rice . Thank you so much for blessing my family ."

"My short-term goal is primarily to expand my current livestock flock. I'm hoping to raise enough money to add to my existing herd of cows, goats, and chickens. In the long run, I would like to see all of my children finish their education, get good-paying jobs, and have access to all of the opportunities that we as parents may not have been able to provide for them."

"I used the GiveDirectly funds to upgrade my house to a two-bedroom with an attached verandah. This had been a long-held ambition of mine, and GiveDirectly enabled me to realize it. This was closely followed by my purchase of pvc water pipes, which I installed throughout the house to ensure we have a consistent supply of piped water. I went on to buy a female goat, food for my children and myself, and school supplies. I'm a single mother of six children. I had seven children, but both my last child and my husband died. My three eldest children are all married and raising their own families. They have a sibling in Mombasa who is a college student studying tailoring. My final two are both casual laborers. I was relieved that the funds enabled me to meet the financial needs of my children without requiring my eldest to assist in their care. I was previously solely reliant on burning wood to make charcoal and selling it to make a living, so the funds from GiveDirectly came as a huge relief."

"Receiving this money means that I will be able to change my story. By this I mean that I will be able to buy food, thus, 10 bags of maize at $25 each. I believe this will be sufficient to provide me a cushion in terms of food security until the next harvesting season. Thereafter, I plan on using this money to mould bricks and build a 3 roomed house for me and my son to offer us the comfort we need. I am unsure of how much this would cost at the time, but if I happen to have an excess amount of money after that then I will buy 3 goats so that they breed and multiply and later sell them to vendors at a profit right here in my village. All these I intend on implementing soon after receiving the cash transfers from GD."
