"Casual labor being our main source of income does not provide enough for my family. My husband and I earn less than 1500 shillings a month because of the inconsistency of these jobs. This makes it difficult to comfortably meet our family needs. It is this situation that has resulted into us living in a chicken pen like house. My school going children can spend up to 2 weeks at home because of school fees as less as 200 shillings. As if this is not enough, going without food is a common scenario in my family. All this misfortune is as a result of financial constraint which is my biggest hardship."

"When I received my first transfer, I bought a dairy cow since it was my priority in the list. I am hoping that it will be calving soon and I will be able to save the money I would otherwise use in buying milk. Also, I bought some furniture majorly seats and a table and bought some decent clothes for my family. I channeled some amount on farming by hiring a tractor to till my farm and also bought maize seeds. I did all this in preparation for planting season. I am now glad since I will be among the first people to plant in my region and to take advantage of the short rains. I used the remaining amount to start a poultry keeping project by buying some chicken. I will be using the income from this project to pay for my children's school fees."

"The biggest difference in my daily life in the last four months preceding the current transfer is that I have been able to build a chicken coop. I have been running a poultry keeping project for some time now and after expanding it, their house became congested since it was small. I am now happy since the congestion has been eased and I can now be able to expand this project more without worrying much. Also, I have been able to buy a goat for rearing. When it reproduces and increase in number, I will sell them and use the money to buy a dairy cow."

"When I received my first transfer, I spent part of it to buy some building materials majorly irons sheets, nails, timber and also paid a mason for the work of building a spacious for my family. I settled on this since we have been living in a one-room house that could not accommodate us comfortably. Also, my visitors always had to seek shelter from my neighbors whenever they visited. I am glad since I can now host them without worrying too much about their accommodation. Also, I bought two goats for rearing and some chicken. I settled on buying goats since they are cheaper and they reproduce within a short time. I will sell them after they have increased in number and use the money to buy a dairy cow. I used the remaining amount to buy two sacks of maize flour and decent clothes and shoes for my family."

"The biggest difference in my daily life is that I am nowadays ambitious and happy. I managed to buy a few chicken for rearing. This project will be a reminder of the good deeds that Give Directly did in my life. It will also sustain me even after they have finished their program in this region. In addition to that, I have also been able to buy some good clothes. Now I am confident when with my friends or even going to events that happen within our village because I have good looking clothes. I won't have to borrow whenever a special occasion comes up."

"I am planning to start a poultry project in the next four months of my life. My current source of income is not enough to sustain me. I felt by starting this project I will boost my income. It is always safer when one has more than one source for efficiency and decent living. I will save for the four months and buy chicken. I have already constructed a chicken house and put everything in order."

"My new goal is to start a poultry project. I am always worried that I will be stranded when GiveDirectly stops sending us the transfers. I am planning to save my transfers so that I start a poultry business. Since there is a high demand of chicken in this region, I am sure to I will have a continued source of income even after Give Directly have finished their program in this region."

"I have been a subsistence farmer for a long time but due to old age which is catching up I want to do more of dairy and poultry farming because it is less strenuous. I have a plan of using the transfers from Give Directly to buy one dairy cow.I have two cows so far and adding one will increase milk yield. The cow will cost me approximately Ksh 25,000(250 USD).I will then fence my compound using a chain link so that I can do serious poultry.I want to double the number of chicken from 10 to 20.The poultry work will cost me around Ksh 10,000(100 USD).I have also been building my house and it is halfway done.I will see to it that I complete the remaining bit of it.I will not forget to take a share of the money to church to help God's work. This is a way of giving thanks to the Lord."

"I have always wished that my family could own a cow of our own. This is not only to provide milk needed especially by our children but as a form of investment.Currently,I have one cow which belongs to a relative. As much as it provides for now,at the end of the day it doesnt not belong to us.Receiving this money will enable me actualize this.Once this is done,my family will be assured of daily income through milk sale whose market is readily available.I also intend to buy some chicken so that I can get a small income through sale of eggs and this will cater for little expenses in our home."
