David
received a $542 initial payment.
"I spent part of my first transfer to build a spacious iron-roofed house for my family. We decided on this as a family since the house we were living in was small and grass thatched. With the growing size of my family, this house would soon not accommodate us anymore as it is growing smaller as days pass by. Also, I bought 25 chicken and built a chicken coop as a way of starting a poultry keeping project. I settled on this so that it will be keeping my wife busy as she runs the household errands. I spent the remaining amount to buy a goat for rearing as a reminder of GiveDirectly. I will sell them after it has reproduced and increase in number and use the money to buy a dairy cow."

Gilbert
received a $542 initial payment.
"When I received my first transfer, I spent some amount to build a house for my family. I bought some building materials majorly 20 pieces of iron sheets, nails, timber, building poles and also paid a mason full of constructing the house. I settled on this so that whenever I have a visitor, I will not be requesting my neighbors to help me accommodate them at night. As a way of starting a poultry keeping project, I bought 10 chicken and built a chicken coop using some of this money. My wife will be selling some eggs and use the money to buy some basic needs for my family. Also, I hired the services of a tractor for my land preparation and planting after buying hybrid maize seeds. I spent the remaining amount to buy two sacks of maize some new clothes and shoes for my family."

Kahaso
received a $541 initial payment.
"I spent KES 30000 to purchase a pair of oxen. I have been using only hoes which are not effective in my a large acreage of my land. I was not able to prepare my farm on time. As a farmer, I always desire to do my farming effectively for a better harvest which would ensure that my family is well-fed and for a much longer time. I am glad that my farming has been boosted through the acquisition of this pair. I also spent KES 5000 to buy some household items and clothing for my family. I am also in the process of implementing a poultry project which I am venturing in. I bought several chickens and feeds and even built a nice structure for them using this money. I will be selling them in the near future to meet my financial needs."

Bendera
enrolled.
"My house collapsed a year ago immediately after the death of my husband. Since I had no means to build another one, I settled for a small structure that resembles a chicken pen. This house can only accommodate 5 out of my 7 children. The rest sleep in their auntie's house. Apart from being small, the structure is almost open and it negatively affects my children's health. They are vulnerable to colds especially during rainy seasons. Living in such a miserable condition has triggered my desire to construct a better house once I receive the transfer."

Mary
received a $22 twenty-first payment.
"My new or additional goals for my life for the next four months starting a chicken business. I am planning to use the little profit I get from my business to build their house so that when I start buying the chicks I would have a place to put them. I thought of chicken rearing business because it does not require a lot of money to start. It also requires less supervision once you have bought their food and put at a strategic place you need not monitor them.
I do sell small fish thus accessing chicken feeds is not a difficult task, also getting their market is easy because we have hotels along the beach they are in most need of them once you are ready to sell."
