"I have always wanted a much better house for my family. I am a single mother with two grown up children and a grandchild. I wanted to make my family a house that had no leaking roof and was much warmer. I also wanted a house that would allow gather water for using within the home since a thatched can't collect water. I also wanted to get a cow for breeding and milking. I had hoped that I would get a cow who would give birth to young ones which I could sell to meet major needs withing the home as well as get milk that can be used in the home and sold to my neighbours for money. It was almost impossible for me to save the money that I earn in my job as a cook as the needs within the house are so many. I make six thousand shillings which sometimes runs out before I receive my next salary and am forced to take things of debt which I pay using my next salary. This means that my money would not be able to suffice for all the things that I would want to do and still save."

"Receiving this money means that I will be able to have clean water for my family and a better house. We would like to build an iron sheet roofed house for KES. 60,000 and buy a 7000 liter water tank for KES. 45,000. The water we are currently using have costed us a lot because we were both diagnosed with typhoid fever in the past year, we spent KES. 12,000 seeking treatment. That was so costly, I had to sell my only cow to raise the money. It is also a pleasure because for the first time in our lives we will get a chance to live in a iron sheet roofed house. This house we are currently living in serves as the kitchen, bedroom and also the living area. Sometimes the smoke is from the kitchen too much and it is not good for our eyes as we are old. We therefore sincerely thank GiveDirectly for this help."

"We have been living here for a long time with my daughter and grandchildren. The house we are living in is old and dilapidated and seeps water. Sometimes last year I decided to build a better house. We pulled resources together with our children and put up the structure. Along the way, the finances got depleted and as a result the construction stalled. There is still some pending work. It has disturbed me a lot that I have not been able to complete it because we lacked the means. We intend to use KES 60000 to cement the floor, put up the ceilings, and do paintings on the wall."

"We were about our daily activities with my husband and at that particular time we were feeding our livestock. One of our immediate neighbours came calling the name of my husband and told him that she had received her transfer. My husband then shared the good news with me and on checking our phone, we had indeed received money from GiveDirectly. We felt so happy and for a while we were in a celebration mood. We revisited our plans and made a decision to spend the transfer almost immediately. The next day we went to the market and bought a 5000 litre water tank."

"Buying a Water tank is the biggest difference in my daily life. I used to walk for a long distance to collect clean water for domestic uses. This was time consuming and tiresome. I had always wished to own a water tank but I didn't had the money. I depend on small business and small scale farming. This tow combined earns me some income that I used it on paying school fees and for domestic uses. When I received the transfer from GiveDirectly I felt so happy. I was able to buy a water tank. I am able to harvest clean rain water. This has given me peace of mind because I no longer stress up on where to get the clean water. I have enough time to do my daily activities well knowing that I have enough water at home. I am so grateful for the support because were it not GiveDirectly all this could not have happened."

"I spend half of the money to build a better and spacious house for my family. I live in a small grass thatched house which cannot host my family well. I build a small dam. This is where I get water for domestic uses at home. The rest of the money I bought food and clothes. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has enabled us achieve our dream."

"The biggest challenge faced in my area is climate changes which have caused some places to become drier and prone to drought. When I received my first transfer all I could think of was water and it was 6 jerricans of 20ltrs for the price of Kes 200.I have 4 children and in a day i can use more than 6 jerricans hence spent all my transfer on water. The second transfer of kes 2000 was spent on water and daily consumption of vegetables and bought clothes for kes 950.My recent transfer was spent on buying vegetables because with the drought vegetables are expensive and they constitutes dominant portion of a standard diet."

"Where I was and where I am today is different. This is through the help I got from GiveDirectly. There is a lot of good improvements in my life. I built my house and booted my business. My only request is for GiveDirectly to kindly assist us in building water boreholes because we are experiencing much drought in my community. Otherwise, GiveDirectly does everything well."
