"GiveDirectly did well for me by giving me this money. But where they didn't do well is that we are suffering to get the money that they sent us. Secondly they don't accept even water from us to drink neither talking about food or fruits. We are begging them to have their own agents so we can get our money easily."

"Having been sleeping in a small old house, the first priority was constructing a good spacious house. I bought 20 iron sheets for KES 16000.00, building poles for KES 7000.00 and also paid school fees of KES 3650.00 for my 3 primary school children. And looking at the hunger situation in our area, I reserved the rest for the family food and water."

"I spent the money from the transfer in buying food. Currently I have no job. I am living a life of hand to mouth. Buying the food was very necessary for me, because I did not have any food in my house. I also spent a portion of the money in paying school fees for my brothers and sisters who are in school. Since I am their elder brother I have the responsibility of ensuring that my younger siblings go to school and get the best education they deserve. I spent the rest amount of the money in buying house hold items such as water, detergents and other small items."

"I currently do not have any job. I depend on manual jobs to provide for my family. I earn a living by fetching water for other people. I earn KSH 25 bob for every jericans I deliver. I can manage to deliver 3 jericans in a period of 2 hours. During the lunch ours I have to rest due to the scorching sun. I can deliver up to 6 jericans of water per day. From that I earn a total of KSH 150 each day. The earnings are very little to meet the needs of my family. My husband depends on manual jobs and they are hard to find these days. When I received the transfer I spent KSH 570 in buying food for my family. In addition to that I spent KSH 600 in making my phone which had developed some problems."

"When the money came in I was actually fetching water for one of my neighbours since that is the way I earned a living from time and I was elated because I had so many tribulations and especially my sons health was scaring me since I knew he needed medical attention but I could not afford it."

"My first project that I had in mind even before receiving the first transfers I wanted to buy a water tank so that I could store water for both my family and the livestock as well because our village had scarcity when it came to issues of running water and so the first transfers enabled me to buy a tank and iron sheets. The second project that I had in mind was that I wanted to build another house for eight of my children since they were growing and they all shared two rooms so I want them to be comfortable and also have their own privacy and that is why I bought 3 pairs of iron sheet which cost KES 2550 since each sold for KES 850. My goal though was to buy around thirty more. As for the rest of the money I used it to buy water and pay for the transportation since a trip containing six gallons of water was KES 300 and both the house and the animals need water."

"In my own opinion GiveDirectly has done such a great job because through it and the funds they administer I managed to start my own business and assist financially unlike before where at times I transported water to people's home which barely made enough for my pockets. But now I feel liberated from poverty in a sense because I have become more reliable."

"Last year through to this time has been mostly drought which has affected the availability of food and water. Initially, I used to depend on subsistence farming but under the current conditions, this is not possible. I have mostly been begging for money from my children to be able to get food and occasionally burn charcoal for sale."

"Six months ago I started constructing my house but I'm yet to complete it because I ran out of money. For a long time, I had wished and planned to expand my house since the one we had was too small for my family of eight. I, therefore, plan to use KES 50,000 to complete the house and to purchase house furniture. For the rest of the amount, I will buy a water tank that will help me store clean rainwater."
