"I have always desired a constant flow of income and independence and the transfers will help me achieve that. I plan on purchasing a generator and water pipes so as to plant maize and irrigate. The other amount I will use for household needs such as food, medication, school needs for my children as well as clothing. I am happy because life will be better after the transfers."

"When I received the unconditional cash transfer, I decided to use $250 to pay for my son to undertake a driving course before he could acquire his driver's license. He has always wanted to be a machine operator, but first, he needs to go through driving school to acquire basic driving skills. With the driver's license, he will be eligible to train on how to operate heavy machinery, opening up more opportunities for him in the future. In addition to the initial driving course fee, I have managed to save $300 from the transfers for his training. This amount will go towards his tuition for learning to operate heavy machinery once he completes his driving course. However, the training is quite expensive, so we are trying to accumulate more funds from our casual jobs to cover the remaining costs. My husband works at a water company, and I take on various casual labor jobs to raise money to support our family and ensure our son's education and training are fully funded. The cash transfer has provided us with the initial boost we needed, and we are determined to work hard and save more to see him through his training. It's a challenging journey, but knowing that we are investing in his future makes every effort worthwhile."

"I am so grateful for Givedirectly which has allowed me to have a livable life. We had had so many days where we would go hungry because we would not have made enough from our small business of selling firewood, water and charcoal. My children had at times gone up to four days with nothing to eat. Now thanks to the transfers we are able to get food for our families we spent $42 on buying food for the home. We were also able to pay school fees for the children at $60."

"I can categorically affirm that GiveDirectly has effectively reduced poverty for me and my fellow villagers. Each of us encountered unique challenges in our households, and receiving the unconditional transfers was undeniably the best approach. This empowered us to take charge of our situations and significantly enhance our quality of life. As a result, we now have new homes, improved shelters, livestock ownership, water taps installed in many households, and our children regularly attend school."

Ezra
received a $350 second payment.
"When the recent transfers from GiveDirectly came, they arrived just in time as I was in the middle of a disaster. Lake Baringo had swollen, and the water was almost 400 meters from my house. It was a huge risk for my family. I have two kids, and the floods brought many dangers, including diseases, destruction of property, and harmful water creatures, putting our lives in danger.
To address this recurring issue permanently, I needed to find a good and safer place to live. I secured a piece of land by paying a deposit of $250; the initial price of the land is $400. I plan to pay the remaining amount later using the third transfer from GiveDirectly. Additionally, I used $160 to transport all our materials and build a new home on the land I bought.
Now, I am so happy to be in a safer place, thanks to GiveDirectly. This support has provided my family with security and peace of mind."

Nzingo
received a $27 eighteenth payment.
"I live with my granddaughter and husband, both of whom cannot work due to their conditions. My granddaughter is abled differently and unable to do any strenuous activity, while my mental condition limits my ability to support myself. My husband and I equally contributed and spent $35 to plow our two-acre land, hoping for a good maize harvest. Unfortunately, the rains stopped, making our efforts futile. We spent $50 from the transfers to purchase food, ensuring we never missed a meal despite the failed harvest. Additionally, I spent $17 to buy water and firewood for home use. I am very grateful for the financial support, which has made our life easier and more bearable compared to before we received the financial aid. We no longer miss meals as we used to before receiving the transfers, which is a significant improvement."

Karisa
received a $27 twenty-second payment.
"I live with my wife and granddaughter, who is differently abled and cannot work. Old age is catching up with me, and my wife is mentally ill, so she cannot help in providing for the family. I depend on my son, who works as a casual laborer in Mombasa, hawking bottled water. The financial support from my son is very little, so I heavily depend on the cash transfers for my own survival and that of my family. I spent $58 to purchase a goat, aiming for it to multiply. Once it does, I will have the opportunity to sell some in the future and use the money to cater to my pressing needs. I spent $35 on plowing my two-acre farm as we had anticipated some rains. Unfortunately, the rains stopped, and all the crops we planted dried up, making it a bad investment. Nevertheless, we are hoping that in the coming days, we will receive rain. After the rains failed, I spent $9 to purchase food for my family. This ensured that we had enough to eat and helped us avoid sleeping on an empty stomach. I am very content and happy with the financial support."

Sabina
received a $349 second payment.
"Before receiving the latest transfer of $450 from GiveDirectly, my village in Seseia, Baringo was greatly affected by devastating floods. The disaster displaced many people, including my family and me. We were forced to live in the IDP camp in Loropil for almost a month as everything we owned was swept away by the floodwaters.
Originally, I had planned to use the funds to start a business. However, after experiencing the destruction and displacement caused by the floods, I decided to prioritize the long-term safety and stability of my family. I invested $350 of the transfer to purchase a half-acre plot of land situated on higher, safer ground. This investment ensures that future floods will not negatively affect us. Additionally, this new plot provides a secure location where I can continue my agribusiness without the fear of destructive shocks like the one we just experienced.
With the remaining $100, I addressed the immediate food needs of my family. The transfer came at a time when we were facing severe hunger in the camp, and it was a vital resource for us during this difficult period.
I am deeply grateful to GiveDirectly for their unconditional cash transfer. The money provided us the liberty to address and respond to the flood issue directly, securing our future and helping us meet our immediate needs. Thank you, GiveDirectly, for making this possible."
