"The transfer has brought a big difference in my life and that of my family because it has enabled us to achieve our dream. We have been able to start the project of rearing chickens, goats, and sheep that I believe will help us now and in the future. The chickens will enable us to get eggs that we can sell and use the money to cater to household needs such as buying food and other small household items such as sugar, soap, etc. The goats and the sheep that I will buy with the money that is remaining will be of great help to us especially in the future. This is because they will reproduce and multiply in number. I can hence sell some of the offsprings and use the money on other important things such as paying school fees. I have also been able to pay my son’s school fees with the transfer and I will not be having any stress about where I am going to get the money to do so. My child who is about to complete his primary education will also be able to study well without his studies being interrupted by school fees arrears. I sometimes go to look for casual jobs so that I can get money to buy food for my family. The two bags of maize that I bought will from hence enable us to have something to eat for a while. I will hence no longer be having worries about what my family is to eat and I can concentrate on my farm work."

"I depend on mixed farming to earn a living and provide for my family. To me, receiving a transfer from GiveDirectly was a chance for me to boost my farming thus I took KES39000 to invest in farming. I bought a cow since I never had one, chickens to and to my poultry and a wire mesh to fence the poultry farm. In addition, I used KES10000 to build an extension room to my house that can allow me to host my visitors comfortably when I have them around. I used the remaining amount majorly on my family's daily basic needs mainly food."

"The transfer from GiveDirectly has helped us in a big way. We were able to buy a cow with part of it. We also bought a solar panel battery, a woofer, chairs, food and some clothes for our children. I have always wanted to have a cow of my own because I have been buying milk for a while now. The milk that we buy is only enough to prepare tea and hence our children have been lacking milk for their consumption. We had bought a solar panel but we had not bought a battery for it. We have been borrowing the solar battery and hence when the transfer came in, we decided to buy one of our own. We also had no chairs in our home and hence we decided to buy them when we got the transfer. The above was not possible for us to do before due to lack of money. My husband has a small business of buying and selling chicken and I usually practice some small scale farming. The money that we get from the business and farming has mostly been going to the purchase of food. It was hence not possible for us to make any other developments."

Gladys
received a $500 initial payment.
"My children were able to go to school without worry of where we would get school fees and money to buy school uniform since they had outgrown what they had. From my husband's salary, we have been able to buy chicken in order to rear chicken so as not to waste it since GiveDirectly had covered what his salary could do. With the chicken, we can sell eggs or the chicken for income."

"I spent KES26000 of my first transfer to purchase two heifers and KES2100 to buy chickens to add to my livestock. My intention is to keep them since I am looking forward to having many of them. Besides being assets to me, I can also sell them in case of any financial difficulty. I also spent24900 to purchase some building materials, which include iron sheets, building poles and nails to facilitate the construction of a new house. By doing this, I am happy that even my children will not be troubled with having somewhere to stay. In addition, I spent the remaining amount on household foodstuffs and items."

I also spent KES 2000 on three sofaset seater because I had old arm chairs.I also spent KES 4000 on latest clothing fashion for family because initially I could afford to buy only second hand clothes.I also spent KES 3500 on food and household items. "The transfer has brought a big difference in my life and that of my family. I have been able to achieve the dream of building another house for my family that is bigger and hence enough for all of us. Guests visiting our house will thus not have to suffer because they will be having somewhere to sleep when they visit us. My children have also been able to have their room to sleep and study. The calf that I bought will help us in the future. I will sell it when it matures enough and use the money to buy another cow that can be milked. This way my children will have milk to consume and I will no longer have to incur the cost of buying milk. The chickens that I bought are going to be of great help to me. I will be able to get eggs that I can sell and use the money to buy small household items that are needed every day like sugar, soap, etc. The bag of maize that I bought will sustain us for a while and hence I will not be having any stress about where to get money to buy food for my family. My children too are very happy because they have new clothes for themselves and enough food to eat. Thank you GiveDirectly for making this possible for me."

"I spent KES 25000 on a heifer because it will help boost milk production in the near future because I only have one dairy cow. This is a long investment which will aid in payment of school fees for my kids. I also spent KES 10,000 on fencing posts for my shop compound. I also spent KES 13000 on timber for completion of my shop which had stalled after construction. I also spent KES 4500 on a sheep as an additional to the two I had to help improve and sustain my livelihood. I also spent KES 5000 on latest clothing fashion for my family. I also spent KES 1300 on half a sack of maize because I only had one sack of maize remaining. I also spent KES 1600 on eight chicken layers as an additional to the 12 I had in order to help cater for house hold expenditure."

"The transfer from GiveDirectly has brought a big difference in my family’s life. I have been able to construct the kitchen that I had never imagined that I will be able to due to lack of money. My wife will hence be able to relax because she will no longer have to go through the struggling of finding grass for roofing the kitchen house. We have been able to look like some of our neighbors who have iron-roofed houses. The transfer has also enabled me to buy a few chickens that I am going to rear. The chickens will be of great help to me because I will be able to get eggs that I can sell and use the money to buy household items such as sugar, soap, etc. The four bags of maize that I bought will enable us to have something to eat for a while and hence I will not be having worries about what my family is to eat for some time. I was also able to buy a few chairs to add to the ones that were there in the house. The house hence looks good and our guests will hence be having enough seats to sit on when they visit us. My children are also happy with the transfer because they were able to get new clothes for themselves."
