"We spent KES 41000 of our recent transfer on starting a new business of buying and selling clothes. We also spent KES 3000 on paying for the business rent of the place where we were going to conduct our business. We decided to start the business because we are still a young family and we wanted something that was going to sustain us and help us in the future, especially with the payment of school fees for our children. Other than that, we bought two sheep which are our investment. The sheep are going to reproduce and multiply in number quickly. We can sell some of them in the future and use the money in buying a cow. We also bought a mattress and with the remaining transfer amount of about KES 5000, we spent it on buying clothes for ourselves and the children. We are thus grateful to GiveDirectly for coming up with this program of helping the needy in the society. May God bless you abundantly."

"Since I had recently bought a plot of land and constructed a shade to dwell in, I saw it prudent to plan around building a nice house for my family to mark as the first house in the new home since the one I had built was just a structure to shelter my family. Therefore, I used KES 20000.00 in buying iron sheets. I also used KES 10000.00 to pay school fees for my children who had been sent out of school due to the fee arrears that had accumulated. Since the season we were in was very dry and getting some food was a challenge, I took KES 5000.00 and did some foodstuff shopping for my family. I also bought a cow for KES 12000.00 and some chicken."

"It was around 9 am when I heard a message notification from my phone. I reluctantly check it out I did not know it was a message from GiveDirectly. I could not believe my eyes, it was a message confirming that I have received KES 55,000 from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy because I have never received such an amount of money before. I knew I would be able to buy a dairy cow and cut the daily cost of buying milk. My family members felt so happy too. I stayed for a day and withdrew the money the following day. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has improved our living standards."

"I work as a charcoal manufacturer while my husband is a handyman at a construction site. Whatever little earnings we make, we would fend for my son who is in form four, and my daughter who was in college. Even so, this has been quite a challenge, and most times we have not been timely with our bill payments. So, when I got the funds from give directly. I topped up the amount I had with KES 20,000 from the transfer to settle the KES 30,000 school fee arrests they had. Since we never used to have beds, I bought three 4 by 6 beds and mattresses, one for my husband and I and the other two for my children. To improve our financial stability, I also bought a cow. I then saw it best to build a house for my son as he was 15 years old and needed his own privacy. I also needed seats in my house.  I thereby bought 8 plastic chairs that were selling at KES 650 each"

"The transfer has brought a big difference in our lives as a family. We managed to pay school fees for our child and hence we are happy because he has not been sent home due to school fees arrears. Other than that, we also managed to buy another cow to add to the two that we had. The cow is yet to calve but when it does, we will be able to get more milk for sale and get money for other important things such as paying school fees for our children."

"The transfer has brought a big difference in our lives as a family. This is because having bought a lactating cow, we no longer incur the cost of buying milk like before. We also have enough utensils for our use and the children are happy because they got new clothes to wear."

"The biggest difference is the purchase of a dairy cow. The huge investment in livestock has brought an impact on the provision of adequate milk for my family members. I am no longer spending money on buying milk instead, I spend in buying other household items."

"Receiving this money means investing in poultry farming because this is the only project that I can maximize my time on it. In addition, this project does not require more energy as compared to other livestock like goats or cows. With these transfers, it will enable me to buy some chicken and also construct a cage for them. Since there is a good market in our nearby town, Mariakani, I am so confident in reaping a huge profit. The profit from this project will directly help me to meet my very basic needs like food and clothing."

"Education forms the basis and the platform that can lead to a future successful and enjoyable life. However the hopes of my children learning is getting dimmed day by day especially after the first born dropped in the mid way in secondary school. I have been tirelessly burning and selling charcoal to pay school fees until when I got challenged by a snake bite which rendered me sick for several months. I have not full recovered though with the Givedirectly transfers, I have every reason to smile. The first five months cash received will be directed towards offsetting the current school balances. In addition, I have scheduled a five year plan where I will be buying a goat at 2000KES from every transfer and let them multiply to a point when I can exchange them for cattle. With just two dairy cows in the compound, I can be rest assured of a smooth life through the sell of milk."

"I do subsistence farming for a living. I have been doing it manually since I have no livestock to help in cultivating the farm. I used part of the transfers to buy two cows for farming worth Kshs 35,000. I feel so relieved as this saves time unlike before when doing it manually was so tiresome. I also used Kshs 20,000 to pay school fees for my son joining form one. Were it not for the transfers, I would have opted for a day school due to insufficient funds, although it is not condusive as the kid wakes up so early and gets home so late in the evening. I thank Give Directly for the transfers as joining a boarding school is his dream come true."
