"I have two little children a boy and a girl. This means that I have to buy milk at 40ksh daily for them. This translates to 1,200 ksh a month which is expensive for me. With the money I will receive, will buy a cow with 30,000 ksh to help me provide milk for my family and also reduce monthly spending on milk. I will buy a tank with 17,000 ksh because our water source is far and it will help us store water. I will use 14,000 ksh to buy a sewing machine for my wife and a chicken shed with 10,000 sh in order to help me boost our income."

"The hardest hardship I am facing is unemployment. Iam doing a small business of selling chicken and it is not doing well. So what I really want is to get employed so that I can earn good money to buy land and to fulfill my responsibility as head of family."

"It means a lot. Yesterday when we were called for a baraza and told what GiveDirectly had for us, we were elated. I do not have a kitchen and so I cook in the main house. This is uncomfortable because of the smoke since I have a little baby. I plan to build a kitchen at a cost of 20,000 shillings so that I may reduce the smoke in the main house. We also buy milk at 1,500 shillings a litre per month which is costly. I plan to buy a cow at a cost of 32,000 shillings to help ease the burden of buying milk. I intend to build a sheep and chicken shed at 20,000 shillings and the remaining amount used to cater for food."

received a $492 second payment.
"My life is different than how it would have been had I not received the transfer. This is because I have been able to acquire a dairy cow. Due to this, I am now glad that very soon, I will not be buying milk anymore. Also, I will be able to use the income from the sale of surplus to pay school fees for my children and to cater for our needs. Being able to purchase chicken is also a major step I would not have made had I not received the transfer. I can easily convert one to cash when faced with financial crisis."

"Self reliance is what receiving this money would mean to me.I mostly rely on my husband to provide food, school fees and clothing. Having my own source of income will be great.I rear chicken but I do not have good housing for them.I would use 40$ to build a poultry house and buy chicken feeds for them so that they can produce eggs which I can sell to get money. We also plan on putting up a good house to live in because my husband is retiring in 2021."

Muhambi
received a $493 second payment.
"My life is different than it would have if I had never received the transfer in that I was able to prepare my farm by hiring works. In addition, I hired a casual worker to clear the bush area around my home which had a dangerous wild animal that had been disturbing me by eating my chickens. Furthermore, I was able to purchase oxen which will reduce the burden of hiring one from my neighbors. Lastly, I was able to construct a kitchen and purchase enough food for the family."

Patrick
received a $510 initial payment.
"I spent part of my first transfer on buying building materials such as iron sheets, timber and nails. This was for the renovation of a new roof for my previous house becasue it has an old roof and some of its walls which were almost falling and I was afraid it would collapse anytime. Also, I bought chicken as an asset that I can rely on at any time considering I have been yearning to start poultry farming. Also, I cleared fees for my brother who was in secondary school. With the remaining, I bought enough food for my family"
