Charo
received a $26 sixth payment.
"Ever since I got enrolled into GiveDirectly, I decided that each time I receive the transfers I would invest in growing my farm and buying more farm animals. So each time I got the transfers I bought a goat and so far I have three goats, so when the recent transfers came in I decided to add one more goat making them four. The goat cost me about KES 2,500. The reason as to why I an purchasing the goats is that I want to rear and breed them so that in case of financial emergencies I can always offer them up for sell but eventually I would want to purchase a cow so that it could help me plough the land during the rainy season. Afterwards I was left with about KES 500 which I ended up using it to pay school fees for two of my children since they had been kicked out of school and had been home for about two days."

"The biggest difference in my daily life is the ongoing construction of a cow shed that is almost into its completion. After a long struggle to obtain enough construction materials that could have completed the construction, I am glad Givedirectly came in to support my dream of owning one."

Caroline
received a $468 initial payment.
"With KES 30,000 from my first transfer, I spent on purchasing a heifer. For a long time, I had been keeping a dairy cow which was given by one of my relatives since I didn't have milk. I am so glad since it is almost calving and soon we are going to enjoy more milk production and later on can sell the surplus to earn an income. I also spent KES 10,000 on paying term fees for my son who is in secondary school and I am excited since he will be studying without being sent home to collect school fees. The remaining part of the transfer I spent on buying clothes and food for my family."

"The biggest difference in my life since I started receiving payments from GiveDirectly is the dairy cow that I bought with the money. This investment have brought a lot of changes in my lufe. The most immediate one was that I no longer have to use a lot of money buying milk to be used at home. These days I do not have to go looking fir odd casual jobs to raise money for buying such essential commodities and I have even had more time with my family. Once the cow have it's subsequent calves, I am sure to have enough milk that we can even sale and make our lives more comfortable. I now have the greatest peace in my mind than ever before."

Lesebeth
received an initial payment.
"I used KES 40000 to buy four cows for keeping and used another KES 15000 to buy food for my family. I had made the decision to buy the livestock long before I even received money from GiveDirectly. This was so because I did not have any livestock in my compound having sold all that I had earlier to pay school fees for my children and to meet other needs. Age is also catching up with me and with the hard work that involved my firewood selling business, I slowly but surely was not going to manage doing the business. I am glad that the livestock that I own shall go a long way in enabling me make ends meet even after the transfers are over. Right now, I have had time to relax and be happy having stopped doing the firewood selling business. To me, GiveDirectly has come in as a form of blessing and a life changer too. I am so grateful and happy to have been chosen to be among the beneficiaries of this program."

Annah
received a $468 initial payment.
"With the first transfer, I spent KES 25,000 on buying a heifer with the hope of soon starting to enjoy milk production which is in addition to the one I have. The two cows that we now have are not only for milk production but we can also sell when we have an emergency. I also spent KES 15,000 in payment of school fees for my son who was joining form one and also spent KES 5,000 on buying school shopping for him as well. I am glad he is fully settled in school for the entire term. With KES 4,000 I spent in tilling my one acre of land in preparation for planting. The remaining amount, I spent on buying maize and clothes for my family members. I am grateful to Givedirectly for the timely support."

"Before we got our recent transfer, we had already made plans to buy a cow with part of it. We, however, did not follow our plan since we got the news that our neighbor was selling a point of an acre piece of land, at KES 30000 that is adjacent to ours. We thus decided to buy it since the one that we owned was small in size. We also bought a calf at KES 10000. The calf is our future investment and it is going to help a lot when it will have matured and calved. Other than that, we also paid off a debt with KES 3000, and with the remaining transfer amount, we spent on buying clothes for ourselves and our two children. We are hence so much grateful to GiveDirectly for their big support. May God bless you."

Daniel
received a $468 initial payment.
"It was almost 5 pm and I was at the farm cutting nappier grass for my cow to feed on. I had my phone with me but I had left it in my coat aside at the farm, so I didn't hear it ringing. It was until I was done with the work that I thought of checking it since we had heard a few people in the community saying that they had already received their transfers. We were thus eagerly waiting for it. I saw that I had an unread new message, I hurriedly opened it and to my surprise, it was the SMS indicating that we had also received the KES 55000 that GiveDirectly had promised us. I was filled with so much excitement that I immediately went home and informed my wife of what had transpired. She was so happy too and we gave thanks to God for the blessing."

"Purchasing a dairy cow is the biggest difference in my daily life. This is because I had sold most of my cows to pay the school fees for my two children in secondary school. I depend on casual jobs in the village and small-scale farming as a source of income. The amount of money that I got through this was so small and I was not able to clear the school fees on time. This made me sell my cows to pay the school fees. My family was not getting enough milk like before. When I received the money from GiveDirectly I felt so happy because this was my opportunity to purchase a dairy cow. Currently, I have a dairy cow and my family gets enough milk. I no longer get worried like before. I have peace of mind to conduct my daily activities at home. Were it not GiveDirectly it would have taken me quite some time to own a dairy cow."
