Joyce
received a $467 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my life today is that I was able to purchase a dairy cow with the transfer. At the same time, I was able to purchase a water tank for storing clean water and harvesting rainwater. I was unable to realise the goal due to financial constraints. Thus, I am relieved that I can save up the money that I used to spend on milk daily. More so I am happy and fulfilled that I was able to achieve my dreams in a short period. I am so thankful for the support that uplifted our lives amazingly."

"It was 10 am when I heard a message notification from my phone. I was Just at home relaxing, When I checked it out I could not believe my eyes. It was a message confirming that I have received KES 55,000 from GiveDirectly I informed my family members and everyone celebrated with joy. I knew I would be able to purchase a dairy cow. This was my main concern because buying milk daily was so costly. I went and withdraw the money the following day. GiveDirectly has changed our living standards to be much better than before."

Dama
received a $467 initial payment.
"When I withdrew the money, I first bought the construction materials because my main agenda was to get a good house. I bought some poles and rafters for KES 12800.00, I paid KES 12000.00 to the contractor for his labor. Thereafter, I bought two goats for KES 7000.00. I chose goats because they are cheaper to buy, and concerning our area of residence, they can resist drought to a certain degree than cows. Having done that, I saved the remaining amount while waiting for the house frame to be completed so that I buy some iron sheets for roofing."

Nyevu
received an initial payment.
"For a while, I had been staying in darkness at night due to a lack of money to buy some paraffin. This state did not give me peace of mind since it was risky to be in the dark during cold seasons because it's a season that has so many snakes. Concerning that, upon withdrawing the money, I bought a solar panel and three bulbs for lighting at night for KES 9000.00. I also bought three goats for KES 9600.00. I preferred goats over cows because they procreate faster and they have ready markets since they are affordable. Thereafter, I used KES 10000.00 to renovate my house since it was collapsing on one side. For the remaining amount, I saved and I am slowly using it to buy some food for my family."

Benci
received an initial payment.
"Upon receiving my transfer, I spent KES 38000 to buy a dairy cow as an investment that I can rely on in case of an emergency. In addition, this is my alternative source of income through milk sales and I will no longer be depending on casual work alone. I live alone and my grandchildren visit me at times during school holidays. I am happy that I will no longer have to go strain in order to eat since I will be earning extra income from the sale of milk. In addition, I used KES 9300 on new beddings to replace the old ones that I had been using. Using the remaining amount, I bought two sacks of maize so that I would relax from doing casual work in order to feed."

Langat
received an initial payment.
"Buying milk has been so expensive that we would at times take tea without milk despite having four children who are young and still needs milk for their growth. I thank GiveDirectly so much for their support that has transformed our lives and given us a reason to smile. This is because I am now a proud owner of a dairy cow. Due to this, we no longer buy milk like before, and aside from this, I earn some money through the sale of milk after setting apart some for our consumption."

Marriam
received a $467 initial payment.
"I built a new house for my 5 children worth KES 20000. We all lived in a tiny two-roomed house that could not accommodate us all. Building the new house has created enough space to accommodate every member of the family. Besides building the house, I bought a dairy cow at KES 25000. Buying the cow allows me to have an alternative source of income. For the past three years, I sold charcoal because I had no job. I did not work on the farm because of the prolonged drought. It was a struggle for me as I earned very little and could not cater to all my family’s needs (paying school fees, buying food and clothes). Besides buying the cow, I spent KES 8000 preparing my 3 acres of farm and bought planting seeds as I wait for the right time to plant after receiving heavy rainfall for a very long time."
