Lina
received a $466 initial payment.
"I was just relaxing at home after a busy day at the farm when I heard a message notification from my phone. I informed my son to check it out for me. He said that it was a message confirming that I have received money from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy because I was waiting for the transfer as promised by GiveDirectly. I withdraw some amount for household basic needs the same say and withdraw the remaining amount later. I knew I would be able to buy a dairy cow and cut the daily cost of buying milk."

received a $466 initial payment.
"I used KES 27000 to buy a water tank paid school fees of KES 6500. I used another KES 4500 to build a rather simple poultry house . The remaining amount of money was used to buy other basic household needs like food and clothes for my family. I made a decision to buy a water tank since I had a serious need for one. I did not have a huge container that would collect enough water for use in our household as well as for the cows. I would not concentrate in my clothes selling business as I had to always keep thinking about where and how my cows would get enough drinking water. I had not been able to accomplish all these since the amount of income that I got from my shop keeping business would just be enough to pay school fees for my children."

"The biggest difference in my daily life is that I am now a proud owner of a dairy cow. It has always been my dream to purchase it but because of the financial hardships that I have been encountering, I could not afford it. I however resolved for the cow because according to me it has numerous benefits besides the climatic condition in my region being so favourable for its survival. I am therefore very certain that soon the cow will start producing milk. I am planning to start a business selling the milk to the neighbouring dairy shops and generate an income. The money will empower me to send all my children to school without strain like before. I have been depending on small businesses and sometimes I was unable to bring food to the table. As a single parent of three, having the cow will bring a positive impact on my life. I also believe that through this investment, I will be able to achieve a lot as they increase in number."

"The biggest difference in my daily life is that I was able to purchase a dairy cow with my initial transfer. I have had the goal for so many years but I failed to accomplish it due to financial constraints. I am happy that I will no longer be spending money daily like before. Secondly, my children are all happy because I was able to clear the school fees arrears. I am so happy and thankful for the support that lifted my living standard amazingly."

Mwaka
received a $26 sixth payment.
"I bought two goats at 6000 KES with the recent transfer and saved KES 3000 in a rotational saving and loaning group so that when I earn my shares then I can purchase more goats. They reproduce faster hence I am hopeful that by December I will have a good number some of which I am planning to sell by then to raise money for purchasing a cow. With the cows, my family will be assured of enough milk for consumption and even sell the surplus. We shall, therefore, be assured of a good source of protein and an additional source of income from milk sales."

"It was around 3 Pm, I was just relaxing at home when I heard a message notification from my phone. When I checked it out I could not believe my eyes it was a message confirming that I have received a sum of KES 55,000 from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy because I have never received such an amount of money. I knew I would be able to purchase a dairy cow. My family members were so happy and even the entire village household received the transfer. I withdraw the money the following day and started planning on how to spend it well."

William
received a $466 initial payment.
"I used KES 28000 to buy two heifers for paying dowry for my son and used another 10500 to buy pieces of iron sheets for building a new house for my children who would travel for long distances to their place of sleep every night. The remaining amount was used to buy food, foot medical bills for one of my child who fell sick and meet other basic household needs for my family. The decision to buy cows for paying dowry was because of the deteriorating relationship between my in laws and the fact that we had delayed in making the payments. I am happy that the beautiful relationship between us has been restored. As for the house that I built, it was informed by the fact that my children would have to travel for long distances evey night to sleep over a nearby shopping center. I did not find this safe for them especially during this electioneering period where they could easily be manipulated into doing things that would endanger their lives. I had not been able to accomplish all these before since I normally rely on horticultural crops to earn a living and the income that I get from it is hardly enough to feed my family."

Jane
received a $466 initial payment.
"My Son was about to sit for his final exams at the University. But, the major problem was that he needed to have cleared all the school fees arrears for him to be allowed in the exam room. I was stranded and devastated, Fortunately for us, the transfer came at the right time of need. I was relieved and happy, I then used KES 20,000 on my Sons school fees and then I used KES 15,000 on renovating my house. Finally, I used the remaining amount to buy a cow worth KES 15,000. I am a mother of seven children, though only three are still under my care. I am happy to have accomplished so much in a short time which I was unable to do before due to financial constant school fees responsibilities."

"My life has changed amazingly and I am grateful. Owning two cows is a total blessing because this would mean that my children would have enough milk for their daily consumption. Additionally, renovating my house has been a dream that I have had in the pipeline for a while now, and I am glad that I would be able to accomplish it."

Chengo

"Upon withdrawing the money, I used KES 20000.00 to buy a cow which was my long-time desire to have one. Thereafter, I used the KES 34000.00 to start a shop business where I sell fast-moving goods such as food items. I opted to start the business so that it could generate some income to sustain my family since I had no defined job."
