Jumwa
received a $462 initial payment.
"The biggest difference that I can attest to is that before GiveDirectly came into my life, I had no livestock but now I have goats and a cow. I am grateful because GiveDirectly fulfilled enabled me to get them and they are serving me as an investment. In addition to that, if it were not for GiveDirectly maybe my house could have collapsed by now but I am registering my thanksgiving to the organization for it enabled me to renovate my house before I could count losses."

Sidi
received a $462 initial payment.
"When I withdrew the money, I first bought a bale of maize flour to ensure that I have enough food at home. I also bought a cow knowing that it will produce milk both for sale and family use. The milk would serve as income-generating work once the cow gives birth. Having been sleeping on a poor traditional bed and a mat, I saw it prudent to buy a good modern bed and a mattress for KES 7500.00. I again thought it a nice thing. I sent four plastic chairs for seating on. In the livestock category, I also bought 2 goats. For the remaining amount of money, I bought some food for my family."

Zawadi
received a $462 initial payment.
"I spend KES 10000 of my first transfers on paying school fees for my four children, one in college and the others in primary schools. As a single parent, it has been worrying me a lot as much as I have been trying to make ends meet, I could not raise the fees needed. It is now a relief to us because I am assured that they will study comfortably for the rest of the year. Also, I bought a wooden door to fix into my house because the initial one had worn out. To add to that, I bought livestock( dairy cow) and I am very optimistic that I will achieve most of my goals through it. One of them is paying fees for my children since I will soon start supplying milk to nearby dairy shops. With the remaining amount, I bought food for my family."

Mutai
received a $462 initial payment.
"It was almost impossible to own a dairy cow due to our financial status. Whatever little that we earned from the farm was used in paying for our children's school fees and in meeting our basic needs. My daily life is different because I was able to purchase a cow with the unconditional cash that I got. Secondly, I am happy because we have enough foodstuffs in the house to last us for a while. I am contented and happy to have received the funds that transformed our lives."

Daisy
received a $462 initial payment.
"Since I received my transfer, the biggest improvement in my life is that I have a well-fixed and new water tank in my compound. Sometime back, I could not imagine that this could one day come to pass. I was always struggling to obtain water for my household usage. With the money, I can harvest rainwater easily. This helps me because I do not have to walk a long distance to look for water. I also find it easier to water my kitchen garden hence I will be able to raise some vegetables. Lastly, my two lactating cows are nowadays well watered resulting in increased milk production."

Caroline
received an initial payment.
"My first priority was to solve water crisis which we had, for me I can't carry water due to my health and every time I would depend on my spouse to fetch for me some water for domestic use or even pay someone to bring for me some water to use at home. I would only depend on sale of milk but when cows aren't lactating it would be tough for me to get to pay someone to bring for me some water. I chose to acquire a water tank at a cost of KES 21500 and fixed cutters for harvesting water at a cost of KES 5000. I also bought a solar for lighting in our home at a cost of KES 4000. The remaining amount of KES 24500, I spent on buying some clothes for my family members and some foodstuffs. I am happy that I have enough container for storing water and that has brought me joy."

"The improved standard of living for my family is the biggest difference in my daily life after receiving my first transfer. Expansion of poultry farming after adding 12 hens and also bringing in an upgraded breed of cow has been a boost in our hope of having a better life in the future."

Joyce
received a $462 initial payment.
"We used KES 40000 to buy a dairy cow and used the remaining amount to buy building materials. We made a decision to buy a dairy cow since we had lost one after a short illness yet we knew how important such livestock investment would be to us. As for the house, we made a decision to build a new house since the one that we owned was too small and a grass thatched hut. This was getting too small for my family of five children to an extent that we had to send some of our children to sleep over their grandmother's house. We are people who rely on casual labour to raise income that helps in feeding our families and this would provide just enough to feed our family."

Annah
received an initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my daily life is the regained dignity in my family after begging for a liter of milk from the neighborhood when I could not buy to owning a dairy cow that is currently expectant. I have been grateful to my supportive neighbors and the extended family when I had nothing at all. It is my prayer that I will also stand in when they need support in the future as I believe that my life will soon be better."
