"I have plans of buying a dairy cow and improving my kitchen. When I received my first and second transfer we were able to improve our house by erecting a ceiling in it and cementing the floor of the same. We were also able to buy a water tank and cleared all debts owed to us by some individuals. I am happy that I was able to accomplish all these and now looking forward to improving our kitchen and buying a dairy cow. Some of these investments we have not been able to accomplish since the amount of income that we receive from the work that we do is just enough to feed the family and we are hardly left with anything to save."

"In my opinion, Givedirectly did well by boosting living standards for every household from the construction of houses, purchase of dairy cows, water tanks, and others which most people didn't have. I do not have any complaints."

"The biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving money from GiveDirectly is that I do not have to undergo the kind of pressure, hustle and bustle of looking for food for my family. I used to be literally harassed by the responsibility of finding food for my family given the fact that the casual jobs I could find were not reliable neither were they regular. However, with the coming of GiveDirectly to our village and getting me to be enrolled into the program, that kind of struggle and harassment has since ended and I am so happy that I was able to address the most pressing challenges that I had been facing especially food for my family and water for most of the household activities and needs. Water was has been a serious challenge in our area but, thanks to GiveDirectly, it is no longer as pressing to me as it has always been."

"I spent KES 15,000 on my transfer to purchase a brand new motorbike for my family on hire purchase and I planned to pay the remaining in installments. We intend to start a taxi business as a reliable source of income for my family. This was to supplement our father's income from his water vending business a job that is not sustainable to upkeep our family of three. The income from this job will be used to pay our school fees as well as bought food for the family. In addition, I bought a bed and mattress for KES 11,000 this was for my father who was sleeping on the floor. Lastly, I saved some money for the payment of our school fees for my brother and me when they are reopened. With the remaining amount, we bought enough foodstuffs like rice, sugar for our family."

"My spouse and I are tailors by profession and we both have functioning sewing machines. However, our operations crashed due to constantly lacking funds to procure materials for the business. It has been difficult to revive production because of a house construction project that is underway. Also, my wife has been receiving treatment following a diagnosis of growth in the uterus, which requires a lot of cash. So, from the recent transfers, I deducted 4,800 KES to settle her hospital bills and secure medication. Additionally, I secured two bags of cement worth 1,240 KES to progress the building task. I spent 1,500 KES to buy one bale of maize flour to provide meals for the entire month. Water scarcity being a major challenge in my village, I used the remaining amount to secure twelve jerry cans of water."

"For the longest time, we have suffered from water scarcity and hunger due to the lack of rain. We are forced to walk for almost two hours to find a water source, which has been a challenge to me because of my old age. Also, we are used to skipping basic meals since the household lacks a reliable source of funds. As we speak, I am starving for I have had nothing to eat since yesterday morning. Therefore, the cash aid played a vital role in procuring both food and water for the family. I spent 4,300 KES, from recent transfers to acquire maize flour, rice, sugar, and bean cereals for consumption. Next, I hired a motorcyclist to deliver water from the pond and compensated him 350 KES per trip. I saved 1,000 KES, intending to acquire iron sheets later for my new house."

"My daily life is different, this is because I was able to construct a decent and spacious house for my family. I no longer worry during the rainy season because I was able to solve the problem with the transfer that I had received from GiveDirectly. In addition to that, we now enjoy clean water because of the availability of a storing water tank. I am thankful for the great milestone that I achieved in a short time."

"It has been a real struggle to fetch water from a well that is two hours away from my home. At my advanced age, if am to collect the water then it means I have to leave home at 4:00 am to make it back home by 10:00 am. I, therefore, opted to hire someone to collect water for me. I am glad to have finally purchased a motorcycle worth 58000 KES from both my savings and the second transfer. This has saved me a lot of time and resources I would use to ensure that I get some liters of water every day. The motorcycle is also a source of income for my household. I have assigned it to a neighbor who brings me water in the morning hours thereafter he operates it for taxi services. The 400 KES that I earn daily from it comes in handy when it comes to meeting my household needs and even saving some at the end of the day."

"After the death of my husband, I am alone as the head of the family and the only breadwinner of the house. My only source of income which is working on the farm is no longer available because of the persistent drought we have been experiencing in our area. I have turned to making Makuti for sale. I earn very little from it because I do not make many because of an insufficient supply of the raw materials from the coconut plant. Upon receiving money from my transfer, I spent KSH 1300 to pay for my two grandchildren who were out of school due to school fee arrears for them to sit for their end of term exam. My daughter, who is their mother, works in town as a house help and did not receive her salary on time. I then spent the remaining amount of money in buying food. Because of the financial challenges I was having, I could not buy food for the past three days and this forced me together with my grandchildren to sleep hungry and survived on water and some wild fruits we picked from the farm."

"The transfer has brought a big difference in my life and that of my family. The food costs that we usually incur have been reduced since we no longer buy milk a lot and maize. This is because we managed to buy a cow and we bought three bags of maize that is going to sustain us for a while. We also bought water containers which we plan to use in storing rainwater and use during the dry season. We always experience a big challenge getting water for use during the dry season. We hence usually buy it where one container goes by KES 50. Apart from the above, we are glad that we now have new clothes that we can wear when we want to travel somewhere."
