received a $443 second payment.
"In my opinion GiveDirectly did so well in offering me support unconditionally. With this I was able to make decisions based on my most immediate needs. Right now I am happy that my children have milk in plenty such that we even sell the surplus to meet other needs of the family. Initially, we were fever with so much scarcity of this very important commodity but with GiveDirectly funds we have been able to buy a dairy cow and be in a position to meet the needs of our family."

received a $458 second payment.
"I used KES 15000 from my second transfer to start an electronics business and used another KES 23000 to buy a dairy cow that was a heifer then. The remaining amount was used to dance my compound with chain link. These three investments were made in an effort to make ourselves more stable financially. The money came at the right time when my wife has just completed her college education and us being a young family, we needed to think of ways that we would be more stable financially going forward. The fencing of the compound would see us do poultry keeping and I am happy that we already have 15 chicken for a start. We look forward to seeing more income from dairy, electronic business and milk selling. I am a father of one and my plan is to use the proceeds from my various businesses to pay school fees for our child and meet other immediate family's expenses."

Richard
received a $444 second payment.
"School fees have been the most pressing need that I have been having. At some point, I was forced to sell out all the cattle that I had. I was left to buy milk for our daily consumption which was expensive. I am into the animal trading business, I am married and so far I still have five children who are still under my care. Upon receiving my transfer, I thought of purchasing a dairy cow worth KES 25,000 to cut down on the cost of buying milk. I then used KES 15,000 on paying school fees for my children. and lastly, I used the remaining amount of my transfer on buying foodstuffs. I am relieved and grateful that I was able to accomplish a lot in a short time which I was unable to do due to financial constraints."

received a $444 second payment.
"I have one lactating dairy cow that provides us with some liters of milk. We also have a heifer that I am hopeful will increase production in the future. I have a new goal to add another cow that will provide surplus liters for sale. We have plenty of space on our field that can accommodate up to five cattle, and this will come in handy when we sell the extra liters of milk to pay household bills."

Bett
received a $443 second payment.
"For a very long time, I used to buy milk at KES 80 per day and that was so costly for me. Though I work as a teacher, I would find it hard to save enough money to buy a dairy cow due to my little income. When I got my second transfer, I spent KES 43500 on buying a dairy cow that was recently calf down. I am glad that at the moment, we have milk for use at home and I no longer spend any on buying the same. For the remaining amount, I spent the first portion on buying feeds for my chickens and the rest on buying foodstuffs for my family."

"GiveDirectly did a commendable job of the unconditional transfer. Initially, I was only relying on tapping business but as of now, I am a proud owner of two dairy cows and a motorbike. I would not want GiveDirectly to do anything differently. The strategy it uses is well thought."

"The biggest difference in my daily life is that through the transfers I have been able to construct my dream house. For years, I have been sheltering under a grass-thatched muddy hut which was small in size. Also during the winter season, it was hectic and annoying because we would be rained on till dawn. We were therefore always attacked by cold-related diseases like pneumonia and as a result, we have been in and out of relatively costly hospitals. Being a widow and the breadwinner, it has not been easy to take good care of my cowife who is very old and build a house at the same time. I depended on the hand-to-mouth charcoal business. I was however positive that through God's grace all these troubles shall come to an end. For now, it still feels like a dream to us because we sleep in a better place. We are no longer affected by the harsh weather like before and there is also enough security."

Jumwa
received an initial payment.
"I am not conversant with phone operations, so I usually leave my phone at home. One of the evenings, when I had just arrived home from taking care of our cows my son, informed me that we had received our first transfer. I was happy and thankful. We did not have any foodstuff in the house, and I was worried about how I could raise money for our dinner. I could not wait any longer, I sent him to withdraw it so that he could buy some food for our dinner."

Jacob
received a $25 sixth payment.
"I started a poultry project that is doing well since I started receiving my transfer. Although I have not yet withdrawn the recent transfer, I intend to use it to purchase chicken feed. I have 45 domestic fowls that I have raised since March of this year. From this poultry project, I hope to raise more fowls to sell and use the proceeds to diversify the livestock I raise. I have three cows, but I look forward to purchasing a fourth soon. It will assist me in producing more milk for my family."

"Initially when I go to enrolled into the program, my plan was to ensure that I will build myself so that I could be able to support my family financially and I planned on investing on farm animals. Therefore when I received the funds I decided to use KES 2000 and purchased a goat because cows were more expensive and the money I had was not sufficient. I did not use the entire funds because I was also lacking in the department of nourishment, so I ended up using the remaining balance which was KES 1,000 and purchased five packets of maize flour."
