Gloria
received a $442 second payment.
"The new goal that I did not have before receiving the transfer is purchasing a dairy cow. This is because always buy milk daily and this is so costly. We depend on small-scale farming and this is majorly for consumption. My spouse does casual jobs and we spent the money that he gets on other basic household needs. We save some money planning on purchasing a dairy cow in the near future."

Mwalimu
received a $442 second payment.
"When I received the second transfer, the first thing I did was add stock to my shop business which I started using the first transfer. I added a stock worthy of KES 30000.00 to make the business more stable and to be able to provide almost all the needs of the customers. I also bought a cow for KES 11000.00 and three goats for KES 9000.00. The aim of buying the cow is for milk provision for my family because I have been buying some milk for them which is very expensive. The goats are for remembering GiveDirectly. As they give birth, the symbol or the presence of GiveDirectly will not disappear from my home."

Jonah
received a $442 second payment.
"I used KES 35000 to buy a dairy cow and used the remaining amount to buy furniture for my newly built house. I had two dairy cows already and I made a decision to buy additional to make sure we have enough milk supply throughout the year. Milk is one of the main sources of income for us as a family and getting such will ensure that we have diversified our sources of income and be more independent financially too. By those cows reproducing too means that I will be able to sell some of the cows and even pay school fees for my children once they start their secondary education. I am a father of three children and my focus is to see them get the best in terms of education too. I am so grateful to GiveDirectly for enabling me and my family realize this dream."

Tonui
received a $442 second payment.
"I used KES 30000 to buy a dairy cow and used another KES 18000 to buy roofing iron sheets. The remaining amount was used to buy food and other basic household needs for my family. I made a decision to buy a dairy cow since we owned just one yet it is one of the main economic activities that gives us a lot of income here at our place. I am happy that the dairy cow has already calved and we now sell the surplus to earn extra income that helps us meet the needs of our family. I also bought building materials- iron sheets as I prepare to expand our house to be much bigger and also improve from that of mud wall to a timber wall. This will make our home more comfortable and more permanent than it currently is."

Pouline
received a $442 second payment.
"When I received my second transfer, I was able to use KES 20000 to buy a dairy cow-heifer. Shortly after buying, the cow died and I was so devastated. I have gotten over it but my new goal is to be able to buy another dairy cow once I get enough money. I also have a son in his final year in secondary school and I am still required to pay KES 10000 to clear his school fees. Once I am able to clear this then I will concentrate on buying the livestock that I have purposed to buy. I know it is going to be an uphill task since I normally rely on small scale businesses to raise the money and this can provide me with just enough to make ends meet i.e buy food."

Rebecca
received a $442 second payment.
"When I received my first transfer, I was able to buy a dairy cow that was already producing milk. With the little amount of milk produced, I was able to sell some in my neighbourhood and use the money to make merry go round contributions. I have since been able to continue making the merry go round contributions without fail and my plan is to be able to use the money gotten from it to expand my income generating sources. I have one business idea in mind currently and it is that of staring a shop keeping business. Once I get my contributions from the merry go round I will be able to actualize this goal and ultimately improve our living standards as a family."

John
received a $442 second payment.
"I used KES 15000 to buy a heifer and used another KES 9000 to buy maize for consumption and the remaining amount was used to improve my livestock selling business and to clear school fees arears for my children. I made a decision to invest in livestock since it is a wonderful savings plan and especially for the huge amount of money that I was awarded by GiveDirectly. I needed something that will not only enable me to save up the money but also multiply with time. Cows will reproduce and give me profits at the end of the day. I am also very available to take care of them here at home since I no longer travel out a lot these days owing to my health condition. The money also came at a time that we were facing serious starvation where we had days we almost slept on empty stomachs. It is for this reason that I spent KES 9000 to buy food for family which has lasted us until today. My livestock selling business has since been boosted with the money but there is a general lack of money among masses making it very slow in terms of profit generation. I am however very optimistic that better days are ahead."

Sharon
received a $442 second payment.
"Before GiveDirectly came into my life, I was struggling a lot to pay school fees for my two children who are in high school. I do farming as my source of income but this activity has not been reliable of late since the seasons haven't been predictable like they used to be. The crops are at times affected by rains and drought as well. After I managed to pay school fees for the whole year for both of them with the transfers received, I now plan to buy a dairy cow for milk production. I know when I got one, I will be having milk for use at home and surplus for sale. That would help me to increase my income."

Penaline
received a $442 second payment.
"I used KES 32000 to buy a dairy cow and used the remainder to improve my restaurant business by paying a whole years rent worth KES 12000 for the business premise. The amount that remained was used to buy food for my family. I feel so much happy and grateful to have received the transfer from GiveDirectly since it has been life changing to me. My business is now quite stable courtesy of the transfer and I also have additional livestock that has empowered me financially."

Kazungu
received an initial payment.
"After a long and exhausting day of taking care of Livestock, I got home about seven o'clock. I received a text message when I was out in the field, but I am illiterate, so I was unable to read what was written. I asked my son to read the note after driving the animals into the cowshed. He told me I had gotten my first transfer, which was great news. I broke into tears because I was so happy. I bowed down and muttered a little prayer of gratitude to God for the miracle."
