Nelly
received a $493 second payment.
"In my opinion, giving money directly to the recipient is the best decision made by GoveDirectly. We had received other smaller aid before but it was so hard for especially for the elderly to fairly receive it but with GiveDirectly, everyone who was enrolled received a timely transfer in their phones. On the other side, we were hoping that we would still receive more than the two promised transfers. This would have been a great favor to us and work well done for GiveDirectly since we still have plenty of projects to accomplish."

Kahindi
received a $493 second payment.
"Before the coming of GiveDirectly, I used to strain in paying school fees for my children and providing for their daily bread as well. Being the family's breadwinner, it wasn't easy for me because I only depended on the causes jobs whereby I could be paid on commission. Therefore most of the time some of my children could stay home for weeks before they could resume back becaus of the huge fees balances. I am now having a huge relief in my life after acquiring the morticcle, life has been smooth. I am now in a position to pay school fees in advance to avoid distractions and I no longer strain in meeting my family needs. This is becasue the motorcycle business is doing well with good returns. Courtesy of GiveDirectly."

Walter
received a $493 second payment.
"I spent part of my second transfer in buying a pair of oxen and a dairy cow and five sheep. These have been the best investments that I have been longing to have in my homestead but due to the poverty life, I could not afford them. I am now a happy soul, because, I will achieve most of my goals through them. Also with the remaining amount, I bought enough food for my family that would at least take us to the next harvesting season."

Loyce
received a $510 second payment.
"I spent my second transfer to purchase 2 lorries of building stones at $230 per lorry. This is for the construction of a permanent house for my family. The one we have at the moment was built with mad walls and it is about to collapse. I wanted to own a permanent one to avoid the cost of building a new house every year which is costly. The remaining amount assisted me to purchase beds and beddings for my children since they were sleeping on the floor and they constantly complain of backache. This has affected their concentration in school."

Mercy
received a $493 second payment.
"My life is different than it would have been if I never received the transfers in that I have bought a motorcycle. I deposited 40,000 Ksh at their offices and to repay the rest of the money on monthly installment. My spouse has always wished to own a motorcycle and we found it wise to own one on hire purchase. We do small scale farming and the harvest that we get is only for consumption. We sell the surplus at the market to earn an income to meet other basic household needs. There was no extra money to saved. Currently my spouse is motorcycle taxi rider. This is our source of income for the family. The money that we get we used it to buy food for the family and save the rest to repay the monthly installment. We are so grateful for the support because it has enabled us to live a better life than before."

Benard
received a $493 second payment.
"I spend the money I received from GiveDirectly to complete the construction of the house that I started using the previous transfer. I used to live in small mud house which could not host all the family comfortably. Currently we live in a decent and spacious house with my family. I am so happy because my dream of living in a good house and not being exposed dust had been achieved. I also bought a heifer. I will have milk in the next few months when it reproduce. It will cut the cost of buying milk daily which is so expensive. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has changed our living standard."

"My ambition is to be a large scale livestock farmer, in particular a sheep farmer. I am currently a motorcycle rider, this only brings in an income of about $2-$dollars a day which is very little compared to my family size of 4 and the basic needs it can sustain. Sheep multiply in plenty and in a year a sheep can reproduce twice or three times making it easier to have a stable income once I start selling. One sheep goes for about $35, after 2 years they reproduce and you get 3 sheep. They do not need special feeding and so grass will do. That is why I will use most of my first transfer to buy 9 sheep amounting to $250 and the rest in building a fence for security and beautification around my compound."

Joyce
received a $491 second payment.
"A motorcycle in our family is an added asset that has really impacted my life and the household as a whole. A profit of at least 300KES daily has been of great support to us in that we had been able to manage all the daily expenditures. This had not been the case before we received the transfer since we never had any constant source of income."

"This money will assist us in a lot of ways. We have been struggling to finish the house ever since we built it. It now needs to get plaster, cemented floor, good windows and doors. In addition,we shall purchase extra bags of maize to be food secure as the one we harvest is never enough to last until the next farming season.
Most of the times, we also face difficulties in going to the nearest trading centre either for emergencies or just to buy other things. If there will be some money, I will encourage my husband to buy a second hand motorcycle so as to ease these transport challenges."
