"I used Kes 28000 to buy a dairy cow and used KES 12000 to pay school fees for our child who is in grade 1. The amount that remained was used to buy food and other basic household needs for my family. When we received money from GiveDirectly, bwe made a decision to buy one dairy cow because we did not own one before. We are a young family and we recently settled down and.mostnof the things that we are doing are to get to bus started as a family. We are so happy as a family to have benefited from the program that has been life changing to us."

"My new goal is to be able to start a small business. I have in mind cereal selling business. This is a business that I had initially started but which later collapsed due to lack of capital to continue with the said business. I am now very optimistic that I will be able to rise again and run this business once I get enough money. Having used some of my money to buy a dairy cow, I am looking forward to that dairy cow calving where I will use proceeds from sale of milk to start this business."

Janet
received a $442 second payment.
"My new goal is to build a new main house for our family. When we received the first and second transfer, we were able to build a new house for our two boys, buy a dairy cow and paid loans that were owed to us. We were also left with some amount which we used to improve our various businesses. Having done all that, we realized that we need to build a main house for us as a family. Right now we just have one grass thatched house apart from the boys house that we recently built. There is need to build a new house for us so that our daughter shall be sleeping in the current house we are living in as we stay in the main house. How we plan to do this is by using proceeds from a dairy cow that we bought and is almost calving. We are optimistic that it will produce enough milk for us as a family to sell and make extra income that will see us build this new house. Our daughter is currently forced to go sleep over in one of our neighbours house and I personally feel this is not good at all for her. We are focused and determined to make sure that we give her the neccesary support by building this new house soon enough."

Gladis
received a $442 second payment.
"I used KES 25000 to buy a heifer and used another KES 15000 to pay back debts owed to us as a family. The amount that remained was used to buy food and other basic household needs for my family. I made a decision to buy a dairy cow since I did not own one until I received support from GiveDirectly. I am a mother of six children and my husband and I rely entirely on off casual jobs to raise income to sustain the needs of our family. T he e amount of money that we often make from this odd casual jobs is hardly enough to feed our family and it is for this reason that we were unable to make such huge investments like purchasing of livestock."

"I work at a food joint in a nearby shopping center and through my earnings, I cater to my family's needs. "I love farming and the support which I got from GiveDirectly came in handy with my plans. It enabled me to add more livestock and build structures to accommodate them. I spent KES 40000 on buying two cows which they have now reproduced. I then spent KES 5000 on buying them chickens and another KES 5000 on buying a sheep. The remaining amount of KES 3000, I spent on buying building materials for constructing a poultry house. I am glad that GiveDirectly empowered my farming and I am so happy for the support."

"When the sheep reproduce and increase in number I will sell some and spend the money to buy a dairy for milk production. At the moment, I do not see any other source of money apart from keeping livestock which I bought after receiving the money. Through these, I will be able to achieve my goal of acquiring a dairy cow."

Joyce
received a $442 second payment.
"I am a farmer and a mother of five children engaged in consistent farming. Upon the receipt of my second transfer, I opted to fence my land to ease grazing. This is because my children are all in school meaning that I would be left to do all the work of herding the cows by myself. Therefore, I saw it fit to use KES 30,000 on fencing. Additionally, farming has been the source of our livelihood thus I used KES 20,000 on the same. Lastly, we stocked enough foodstuffs with the remaining amount of the transfer. Receiving money from GiveDirectly has been of great impact on our lives thus we are indebted to them."
