Harusi
received a $493 second payment.
"Its has been a year since I got married. I have not been able to pay the dowry as a requirement as per our traditions. This is because of lack of adequate financial resources. After receiving the transfer, I spent $210 to start the dowry payment. I also bought building materials including 10 iron sheets at 7.5 dollars each, building poles and treads this was for the construction of an additional room for the children and visitors since the one I had was very small. With the remaining amount I bought pairs of clothes and enough food for the family."

"Securing a sustainable job has been the biggest hardship in my life. I have a family size of 7 children and I only depend on my small business of selling cassavas at our local market. From my sales, I earn an average of 1000 shilling which is not enough to cater for the family's food as well as their education."

"My ambition in life is to be a livestock farmer, I am currently a motorcycle rider within my village. On an average I get about $40 as an income. My wife is a housewife and expectant, my income is not enough especially now that we have a baby on the way. The Give Directly transfer will be of be of big help because I will use $800 to buy two cows, $200 for chicken so that my wife can later sell the eggs and support the family in generating more income. The livestock will be used in future as an investment for the children as they start school."

Fancy
received a $509 initial payment.
"The milk I had been getting from the cow I had on our farm was just enough to cover the household use. This has always pushed me to work extra hard in other people's farms doing casual labor even though the pay was so little. With the transfer I received, I decided to add another cow worth 30000KES with the hope that milk production will increase to a point of selling part as a source of income. I spent part of the remaining on paying school fees for my sons, buying clothing, and also managed to save 15000KES with a plan to add up to the second transfer and use in obtaining a second-hand motorcycle."

"Receiving this money from GiveDirectly means I'll own my of piece of land to do farming. I have been surviving on borrowed farming land from my neighbor for the third season now. I don't like this at all and I feel like I need my on piece of land. I will use 800 dollars to buy the two acres of land each valued at 400 dollars. Getting the two acres will guarantee my family atleast 4 bags of maize every season and this will be a plus in as far as my family's food security is concerned. I'm planning to use the balance to buy two indigenous dairy cows for milk production both for domestic use and for sale. This will boost my family's nutritional status and doing all this will give me the peace of mind I have always desired."

Annet
received a $493 second payment.
"My life is different than how it would have been because I now own a motorbike. Through the bodaboda business, it had brought a big impact on my life because in a day I earn KES 700. This is contrary to the previous days where I was working in a hotel as a waitress ad I could earn KES 150 in a day. This could not sustain all my family's needs and therefore I ended up suffering. It is now a big relief to me because through this, I can find my family with ease and I am in the process of starting a new project through the bodaboda business."
