"My first priority is to invest in my existing business of selling plastic items like basins. I will use half of the first transfer to increase stock of my business located in Mathare 4A. The population is high providing a ready market for my business, I therefore expect to get alot of profit in return. Secondly, I will be able to support my brother's education. He is in class 7 and my parents are not well enough financially. I have been the one paying his school fees. I would want him to get good education so that in future he can be able to get a good job and cater for his upkeep. Thirdly, I will build my home in upcountry. I will be able to construct my own house. Traveling upcountry was a problem to my family since I had to sleep in my mother-in-law house which I felt ashamed of myself. "

"My life is currently different from how it was four months ago in that I currently have a better and reliable source of income. I operate a small business whose profits are small and fluctuating hence making unreliable. In the last four months, I have found so easy providing for my family without using my capital like before this has stabilized my business since I no longer take out the capital from and am happy to see it grow bigger while my family has good access to daily basic needs. I have diverted part of my income that could have spent on daily household needs to farming hence expecting better returns that will still boost my income." (Occupation: Small business)

"Like any other mother in society, my happiness is to always see my family happy and meeting all the necessary daily needs. It had been hard for me providing for my family daily needs since I majorly depend on farming that takes a longer time to mature and with the challenges of land ownership, farming had not been reliable hence I became a seasonal grocery businesswoman and casual laborer to supplement. My life is currently different from how it was four months ago in that I am an empowered woman that can be relied on in our household daily needs and access to basic needs is easier than before now that we have better resources. I have actively do farming to help me in food production and sell the surplus in case of to meet other household needs. I am so proud that I currently own a piece of land that is rightfully mine hence I am free to practice any kind of farming unlike in the family land."

"My life is currently different from how it was before I started getting help from GiveDirectly. Nowadays I can easily take care of my needs compared to before when I only depended on casual jobs that were not reliable and not paying well. I have also been able to boost my business and I can see progress as compared to before. My aim now is to have a business premise in the nearby trading center where I can advertise myself and attract more customers. In addition to that, my child has not been sent home of late because I cleared his fee arrears. The best part about this transfers is that It has enabled me to handle emergencies easily without taking loans. I really feel relieved after getting the transfers from GiveDirectly and I thank them for that."

"It's been more than twenty years since my husband and I separated due to his mental illness. Since then, I have had to single handedly cater for my children's basic needs such as food, education, medication etc. With little and unreliable income due to scarcity of trees caused by massive deforestation, my charcoal business has not been doing well. My children's education suffers the most as they are constantly kicked out of school due to huge fee balances. "

"My first priority is to invest in a new business. I plan to open a salon and a cosmetics shop in Ruiru. I will first pay the premises rent and buy a blowdry and other items I might need for the salon. Secondly, I will use it to buy a dryer, and other cosmetics. I currently work as a hairdresser and I have acquired some experience, I feel I am more than capable to start my own business which will enable me to save and in future buy land outside Mathare and build a house for my mother. I value her so much and would want to give her a comfortable life, where she lacks nothing. Lastly, I want to buy some household items like a television and a water tank to store water due to water shortages we constantly face in Mathare. I need a television so as to stay updated with the current events and even watch movies and series. I am an introvert and I like staying indoors, I tend to sleep alot when I am free and would want to be entertained once in a while by programmes on the television."

"My first priority is to invest in a new business. I am a casual worker, I wash clothes for people at Eastleigh and also do construction work at construction sites. These work is very tiresome and does not pay much. I want to start a business of selling African attires here in Mathare. Previously I had tried to venture into it, I would go to Malaba to buy stock once a month, but I could not keep up with it because of the high cost of transportation. I want to put up a structure where I can sell the attires instead of hawking and be able to go to Malaba more frequently to purchase them in larger quantities. Secondly, I want to pay my childrens school fees. I am a single parent, my husband and I separated awhile ago and I was left to take care of my children all by myself. Currently he is married to the fourth wife and he does not assist me in taking care of our children. I have three children, two girls and one boy. I would want to invest in their education especially my daughters. I would not want them to drop out of school as I did. I dropped out of school at a very early age, my parents passed on and from the age of 12 I became a housemaid. I would like to give them a better life than I had, this I know I can achieve by investing in their education. Lastly, I want to be able to pay my National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF), I registered awhile ago but I have not been able to make my monthly payments. I have incurred a great interest and I would like to settle it inorder to take my children to hospital when they fall sick. One of my daughters got burnt by hot water as she fell into a sufuria while she was playing on the bed, this affected her reproductive organs. I need to be taking her to hospital for check ups but I have failed in doing so since I lack the finances. My other daughter has ulcers that causes her to faint when she has not eaten. I lack money for food at times and in school they eat maize and beans which is not good for her, this means that she has to stay without food till she comes back home and hopefully I have money to buy food. The NHIF card will come in handy whenever they need treatment."

"I was running a business previously but it wasn't doing well. I was unable to bring a variety of goods for my customers which made most of them go to my competitors. Through GD I was able to restock the business and currently, I have managed to open a new branch. I have tried contacting my old customers and I believe with time I will be earning huge profits."

"My life is currently differently from the way it would have been had I not received the transfer in that I have been able to meet the family's needs with a lot of ease. I am a businesswoman and I sell second-hand clothes. Since I boosted my business and made a few changes, I can see there is a slight growth. Initially, most of my customers used to take clothes on credit. This is one of the reasons I couldn't grow since I couldn't have enough to add new stock. I am happy this is not the case anymore."
