"My life is currently differently from the way it would have been had I not received the transfer in that I have been able to meet the family's needs with a lot of ease. I am a businesswoman and I sell second-hand clothes. Since I boosted my business and made a few changes, I can see there is a slight growth. Initially, most of my customers used to take clothes on credit. This is one of the reasons I couldn't grow since I couldn't have enough to add new stock. I am happy this is not the case anymore."

"I spent my first transfer to pay my children's school fees , buy 3 mattresses, 2 beds and bed sheets for my children. Furthermore, I added UGX 100,000 to my million fish business, bought food, clothes, curtains, paid a tithe in church and lent out UGX 150,000. I have not yet spent UGX 150,000 but I planning to spend it to purchase a bicycle for the family."

"My life is currently different from the way it would have been had I not received the transfers in that if it wasn't for the GD money I would still be relying on the casual work. It is very unfortunate that the majority of the jobless community rely on casual jobs. It is not their liking to do them. In most cases, they don't have the means to accomplish the ideas and projects they have in mind. I feel lucky because I finally got the resources to accomplish the several business ideas I had in mind. I thank GiveDirectly for thinking of this idea and I hope to support someone the same way I was supported by GD."

"The biggest difference in my life since I started receiving these transfers is that I was able to plant using hybrid seeds and fertilizer on my farm. I had desired to plant using the inputs but because I did not have the resources to buy them, I had to use local seeds without fertilizer. This is because I only depended on income from casual work and sugarcane business which could not provide for all my needs and that of my family. I used to get only a sack when I harvest and it was worrying me. I felt I was working a lot and getting nothing. Therefore when I started using the inputs, my harvest has increased from just a sack to 5 sacks which has really helped. Thanks to Give Directly."

"My husband has no land where he would construct his own house once he leaves his father's compound, so my he has been saving so that he can buy a piece of land back in the village where they are still affordable. My plan is to use my transfers to revive the doughnuts business I put on pause to organize my mother's send-off after she passed away last month then focus on joining hands with my husband to maximize the savings so that we can reach the target amount before the end of the transfers."

"I have been running a restaurant business for quite some time now and so far the business has been generating profits for the time it has been operational. My plan is to invest more in the business and make it more profitable going into the future. I believe that the business will keep me afloat going into the future even past the period when the GD will have stopped sending us the transfers."

Annah received a $49 eighth payment.
"It was impossible to support my family when my business declined and I had to stay home to take care of my newborn baby. This was especially felt by my mother who has a very huge burden providing for my many young siblings yet has no stable source of income. Receiving these transfers gave me the opportunity to do so even when I had no job and earned very little from my business which is currently being run by someone else I employed. I would not have been able to support my family if I was not getting the money from GD during those tough times."
