"Being a widow and a mother to nine children with eight still schooling, I am forced to struggle a lot in order to support their education and other basic needs. Considering this situation, I opted to do palm wine business that can earn me income for our survival. This job is risky since most of the time, I am required to camp at my selling point up to odd hours in order to get my potential customers. In spite of consuming my time and energy, this job pays very low. Therefore, it is this lack of reliable source of income that I consider being my biggest hardship."

"My first priority is to boost my salon business, my shop and invest in my husband's Mpesa shop.I will buy more stock for the retail shop and expand the space since all three businesses are in the same premises. As for my salon business I want to buy a blow dry and add more stock of braids. Then finally I will add more float for the Mpesa business. By investing in these businesses my income will increase and I will be able to change my lifestyle. My second plan is to use this transfer to help support my younger sister in her education. My siblings and I are required to each contribute for her education, but since I had no money for that I had distanced myself from the rest of the family. Now I am going to pay my part of the school fees and involve myself in family activities. Lastly I want to go to school for a course in hairdressing. I earn some income from the hairdressing services I provide. The course will equip me with more skills and I will be able to provide other services other than just braiding my clients. After the course I will be confident enough to open a bigger salon and earn a better income from it."

"My first priority is to build a house for my family in the rural area. My husband and I have not been able to have our own house due to lack of capital. All our lives are centered here in Mathare but it will be nice for my children to visit their relatives upcountry often. Once I build a house we will have a place to sleep whenever we visit the rural area. Secondly I will use the transfer to expand my business of selling fish. I currently sell in small scale and I want to be bringing more fish and even employ someone to run my second location of selling fish. This will increase my income and I will be able to cater for my basic needs. I will then use the remaining cash to buy a cow in the rural area. I will use it for milk production, sell the milk and get an income from it."

"My first priority is to buy a sewing machine. I have been practicing on how to sew clothes from a friend of mine who is a tailor whenever I am around after hawking clothes around Mathare. I will be able to rent a shop in Mathare 4A and combine it with selling of second hand clothes which I normally hawk. Secondly, I will be able to expand my business of selling second hand clothes in a shop that I will rent in Mathare 4A. I normally get second hand clothes from Gikomba or Korokocho market which I later sell in Mathare. I would like to quit hawking clothes around Mathare and be able to be stationed in one place. This will help my customers to easily locate my business and I therefore expect to get more profit in return. Thirdly, I will complete my house in upcountry that I started constructing a year ago. I will be able to be frequenting my rural area unlike before where I was being accommodated by relatives that made me feel ashamed of myself."

"My first priority is to invest in an exsiting business. I have been a tailor for ten years, now with a shop in Mathare 4A. This work has enabled me to clothe and feed my children all this years. I have mastered this skill and I plan to buy one or two sewing machines, some materials and employ some to work with me at the shop. I plan to teach other women this skill and empower them to start their own businesses. I intend to save the profits I will make, which I know will be put to use to cater to other needs that may come up. Secondly, I have a land in Ugunja, Kisumu and I want to build a house for my family. We do not have a our own house and it is very important for me to have one where I can take my children whenever we visit our parents, this has always been my wish. Money has been the only challenge but now I will put it to action. Lastly, I will spend it in paying school fees for my children, I have two children who are sitting for their Kenya Certificate of Primary Education this year, I want to prepare in advance by saving as they await to join high school this coming year."

"I expect my life to change in the next six months in that, my livestock will have enough feeds from the nappier grass which I recently planted. I anticipate an increase in milk production since the livestock will have enough feeds to feed on and their satisfaction will aggravate more milk. Therefore, I will sell the surplus in order to earn extra income." (Occupation: Small business)

"I spent part of my first transfer to purchase building materials such as iron sheets and building poles to construct my house. Initially, I was hosted at my neighbour's and I never liked this situation which I wished I could change before but then my finances were meagre to achieve this dream. Looking, at my new house which is still under construction makes me feel that I am dreaming since I never expected this at this time. I also purchased three goats to keep in my homestead. These to me are my own assets which will help me in case of any financial challenge in future. I also paid a portion of the transfer to clear the outstanding fee balance for three children. I am glad that they will comfortable continue with their studies without any interruptions concerning school fees. The transfer also provided an opportunity to open a charcoal business. I am buying and selling charcoal in our nearby town which to me is a source of income. I spent the remaining amount on purchasing foodstuffs for my family and paying for other household expenses."
