"Receiving this money means alot to our family . We have longed to buy a dairy cow of our own ,it will be a source of livelihood for us. The one we have at the moment was borrowed from a relative. It doesn't produce enough milk since it is an indigenous one, it produce a little just enough to cook tea in the morning. A good dairy cow will cost us approximately USD 3500. My house is also not enough to accommodate us,some of my children go to their grandparents house to sleep there .It's not safe especially for my teenage girl ,so I intend to build her a small house within my compound."

"Receiving this money means a better livelihood for my young family. For a long time, I have wanted to own a dairy cow, currently, I do not own any. I purchase milk costing me 10 dollars a month. This strains me a lot as I'm the sole provider earning at most 2 dollars a day, which is very little, considering other basic needs I have to meet. The rest of the amount I plan to build a better house. The house I currently live in is small, grass thatched, one roomed house which is uncomfortable since it serves both as the kitchen, sitting room and bedroom."

Neema
received a $506 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my daily life is that I now own a motorcycle which had been my long-time dream to purchase it but because of financial constraints, I couldn't afford it. My spouse has been the breadwinner and would depend on cause jobs as a source of income. On a good day, he could earn 3 USD. This could not sustain all our needs and most of the time we could go without food. However, after receiving the transfers, we had to settle for the motorcycle as a reliable asset that would permanently finish all the troubles in our lives. I am now happy because ever since we started the bodaboda business we have been earning kes 15 USD in a day. In few weeks to come, I am even planning to start a vegetable and fruits business from the profits. This will be an additional income and will enable us to fend our three children with ease."

"My spouse is a mason. House construction jobs involve a lot of travelling. This has always cost him a lot in terms of transport. Receiving this money is therefore an opportunity to save on transport by buying a second hand motorcycle at a cost of about 500 USD. This will also be convenient for him since he will be flexible as well as enabling him arrive home on time. In a day, he uses an average of 4 USD. Owning our own motor cycle will save us up to 50 percent of our income."

Richard
received a $507 initial payment.
"I spent 370 dollars of the first transfer on purchasing heifer and a oxen. I had always wished to invest on livestock because it helps in case of emergency arising at home, this includes but not limited to paying school fees for my children. I also spent 100 dollars as an instalment for the motorcycle which I purchased on hire purchase, yet to clear the balance when I received the second transfer. This motorcycle is a perfect transfer to my place of work. It saves time and money. The rest of the money I bought food and clothes for the family. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has changed our living standard."

"The complete change in the village outlook currently is fully attributed to the great work done by GiveDirectly when they chose to work in our village. Even though we were not directed on what to spend the money on, it is my feeling that every member of the village managed to address the pressing needs they had. Many constructed new houses, ventured into advanced farming, obtained livestock while others cleared school fees payment for their kids. I am one of the grateful beneficiaries as I am currently farming vegetables under irrigation and also bought two cows from both transfers. I have no complaints at all, and as well never heard anyone who would have wished otherwise but thanking GiveDirectly for the work well done."
