Kanze
received a $483 second payment.
"Because of the transfer I received from GiveDirecly, I have fewer worries and stress about being able to provide food, clothing and education for my children. I sell charcoal to earn a living while my husband transports passengers on a motorbike. When he was employed by someone else, our income would be KES 3,000 a week. This amount was not enough to cater for our living expenses. We especially worried about where we would get money to educate our three children.
With the transfer that we received, we purchased a motorbike and he can now earn more money. Our income has increased to KES 4,000 on a good day, and we can meet our family's needs.
We also completed the construction of a new, spacious house. Before, we lived in one that was small and run-down. We are very grateful to GiveDirecly."

"I dropped out of school due to the financial constraints my parents had. Being a motorcycle rider was the only option I had because farming has been affected by the prolonged drought in this area. I was hired by a teacher to ride this bike and I get a weekly wage of KES 800 at most. Although I stay alone this amount is spent on food and clothing and hence I am unable to save anything for the future. This makes me much worried and afraid to start a family because am barely able to provide for myself. Financial constraint is the biggest hindrance in my life."

"The biggest difference in my daily life is the improved living standard. At the moment, a lot has really changed, and have constructed a new house that is spacious enough for my growing family of seven that has been the biggest difference in my daily life. Currently, I am in the final stages of construction a sign that we are soon moving in so that we can demolish the old kitchen as we transition to the new house."

"I fully depend on my husband since I do not have any source of income. Receiving this money will help me start an income generating activity so as to support my husband provide for the family. I plan to start a poultry unit where I can keep chicken for sale and also get eggs for sale. I will start by building a structure at a cost of around KES 5,000 and buying 10 chicken at a cost of KES 5,000 as well. I also plan to spend KES 50,000 to start goat keeping. I will buy 10 goats for a start. From the goats, I can get money to start other projects especially when they multiply."

"Receiving this money from GiveDirectly means I will fulfil my dream of owning a chicken rearing business. I have had a desire of rearing chicken. However this has been impossible due to my poor financial status. I am planning to use KES 50,000 to start my business. This amount will cater for building the structure and buying 30 chicks plus food. I will further use KES 40,000 to construct a three bedroom house for my family. Three rooms will serve me better because one room will be for mine, the other room for my children and the third room for visitors. This is what I have always desired to do and doing this will in the end give me the peace of mind I have always desired."

Elisha
received a $501 initial payment.
"When my current daily life is compared to how it was before, I can say that it has changed a lot. This is because I have been able to start saving some money unlike before when I would spend all my income on food. Due to this, I have been able to purchase 8 pieces of iron sheets that I am planning to use in building myself a more decent house and four chickens using these savings. This has been possible since I was able to purchase a motorcycle that I am using to offer taxi services in the neighborhood using my transfers and as a result, my daily income has increased from KES 200 to KES 400."

"The biggest hardship has been food shortage. We only take meals once a day sometimes. The last goat I had I sold it to buy food for my family. This problem has really depleted all our investments. I do motorcycle taxi but the little money I get ends up in buying food and nothing to save."
