"The money will help me to buy motorcycle and a piece of land.
I live with my wife and my 1 year old son. Together we live on at my wife's village were we build a house. I have a piece of land which we farm and based on rains we sometimes harvest 15 to 20 bags. Mostly those bags are used for consumption and at times we use part of the maize to pay for people working in our farm land. Also we sale part of the maize to buy fertilizer for the next farming season.
I am primary school teacher by professional. My monthly salary is K100000 ($95). Mostly I used the money to buy household items such as food, clothes and other basic needs. I have no savings.
I will use the money to buy motorcycle that will be used for my household. In additional I will buy a piece of land that will be used for farming."

Kanze
received a $483 second payment.
"The lack of a stable source of income has been a major challenge in my family, which has caused my husband and me a lot of stress. Until recently, he used to ferry passengers for his employer to earn a living, and I sold charcoal. Our income would only be KES 3,000 a week. This money was not enough to cater for our living expenses including food, clothing and school fees for our family of five.
We were happy to receive this transfer from GiveDirecly which enabled us to purchase a motorbike worth KES 40,000. My husband now earns money by ferrying passengers and can earn KES 4,000 a day.
Furthermore, we spent KES 13,150 on completing the construction of our new house. My family now lives in a spacious, modern house, as opposed to the previous one which was rundown."

"I dropped out of school due to the financial constraints my parents had. Being a motorcycle rider was the only option I had because farming has been affected by the prolonged drought in this area. I was hired by a teacher to ride this bike and I get a weekly wage of KES 800 at most. Although I stay alone this amount is spent on food and clothing and hence I am unable to save anything for the future. This makes me much worried and afraid to start a family because am barely able to provide for myself. Financial constraint is the biggest hindrance in my life."

Caren
received a $500 initial payment.
"On confirming the receipt of KES 55000 on my phone, I was really excited as this was the first time to receive such a huge amount in my account. I was home alone as my husband left home a bit earlier to attend to his usual Bodaboda business. I had to call him and on breaking the news, he was so happy and promised to be home earlier that day as we needed to plan. All over that time before he came back home, I had a mixed reaction as I was happy at the same time restless as the thoughts of being losing the transfer kept coming to my mind. I had to calm my nerves, kept myself busy, and ensured that the phone was always with me."

"I have always had the desire to achieve higher education. My poor financial condition right now can't allow me reach my goal. On a daily basis, seeing my friends moving forward in education while I hustled on bike to make ends meet is really difficult for me. But being part of GiveDirectly program is a blessing."

"I was raised from a humble background where getting a meal for the day was very hard. I also lacked school fees to continue with my studies beyond primary education. This kind of life has continued now even after getting married. This is because I do not have enough education to secure meaningful employment. I also do not have money to start an income generating activity to support the family's needs; which are so many. Lack of money to support my needs and fulfill my dreams is what has been the biggest hardship in my life."

"Receiving this money from GiveDirectly means I will fulfil my dream of owning a chicken rearing business. I have had a desire of rearing chicken. However this has been impossible due to my poor financial status. I am planning to use KES 50,000 to start my business. This amount will cater for building the structure and buying 30 chicks plus food. I will further use KES 40,000 to construct a three bedroom house for my family. Three rooms will serve me better because one room will be for mine, the other room for my children and the third room for visitors. This is what I have always desired to do and doing this will in the end give me the peace of mind I have always desired."

Elisha
received a $501 initial payment.
"When my current daily life is compared to how it was before, I can say that it has changed a lot. This is because I have been able to start saving some money unlike before when I would spend all my income on food. Due to this, I have been able to purchase 8 pieces of iron sheets that I am planning to use in building myself a more decent house and four chickens using these savings. This has been possible since I was able to purchase a motorcycle that I am using to offer taxi services in the neighborhood using my transfers and as a result, my daily income has increased from KES 200 to KES 400."

"The biggest hardship has been food shortage. We only take meals once a day sometimes. The last goat I had I sold it to buy food for my family. This problem has really depleted all our investments. I do motorcycle taxi but the little money I get ends up in buying food and nothing to save."
