"I spent 50,000 KES of my first transfer to buy a piece of plot purposely for commercial use . This is because the piece of land is near our shopping center therefore its highly marketable to put kiosks which is my long term intention for it so that I would get an extra income from renting them . The remaining amount I boosted my poultry business ."

"I would not have managed to build a house for my children without GD. They used to sleep in my neighbor's house where they would not get time and space to read because they would all meet in the house with their friends and cousins. I always build them a separate house where I can make them study hard and too well in academics so that they ger a better life in the days to come." (Occupation: Small business)

"If I had never received the transfer, I could still be stuck in a life of low income from a small fish business that could barely cater to my needs. I would also still be living a pathetic lifestyle without the basic household and personal requirements such as a bed, a table or decent clothing. All these have now changed because the transfer enabled me to boost my previous business and even start an extra business on second-hand clothing which means more income. I have also managed to buy most of the household items I lacked and I now feel more comfortable welcoming guests into my house without being embarrassed like was the case before."

"I plan to start an avocado and mango farming as a business. I will buy seedlings at KES 20 which is subsidized by my county government. I need to plant about 60 trees. It is going to be a profitable farming venture which is why I am going to spend the cash from GiveDirectly to establish it." (Occupation: Small business)

"Life was very tough before I got enrolled into the program due to my lack of income that caused my family a lot of health problems that were brought about by a lack of sufficient food. I worked as a casual domestic worker or sometimes a construction worker which was not easy especially on an empty stomach. The jobs were also very irregular which made it impossible for me to make enough money for my family's needs, especially foodstuff, forcing us to go on an empty stomach most times that eventually caused my daughter and I stomach ulcers. There has been a lot of changes in my life since I received the transfers because I have managed to buy most household items I never had before and started a business that now earns me a decent and regular income that enables me to properly provide for my family. I have no stress and have realized that our health problems have also disappeared, thanks to the good regular meals that we can now afford."

"The goal that I have desired to achieve ever since was poultry keeping. The story behind my passion for poultry is that I witness my parents provide for our family single-handedly with poultry keeping yet they were not doing it professionally. I am convinced that when I put more effort into poultry farming then I am able to grow it into a business."

"After receiving the second transfers I made a decision to spend part of it which was 50000 KES on adding up to the already existing shop business. I increased the stock and hire one person to help me in the shopkeeping whenever I am committed to other tasks. With the remaining 5000 KES, I used in equipping my newly constructed house. I bought new furniture to replace the old wooden furniture which I was inheriting from my parents long ago."

"Since I majorly depend on my potato business for livelihood, I am still working hard to stabilize it by adding more stock, thus I would say so far I do not have any new or additional income yet. I thought of stocking it to enable me to get a good profit, which will enable me to pay fees for my children and other basics needs with ease." (Occupation: Small business)

"I have three children who are all in school. It is my duty as a parent to ensure I pay for their school fees in time. Unfortunately, due to the low income from a small chapati business, I have never fulfilled my part fully as required. In most cases, I have not always managed to pay for their arrears in time. They have always being sent home for arrears against my wish. This has happened because the little income I get from the business has been the only income I have which the whole family depends on. As a result of the many needs of the family, I have been forced to forgo some needs so as to have met others. In as much as school fees is very key for the children to be in school, sometimes I always fail to pay in time so that we can have food and medication just to mention a few. This is where GD transfers have been very helpful in my life. Every month when I get my transfers, I have always ensured I pay part of their arrears in school and this has really given me a good relationship with the teachers. They are rarely sent home for arrears and whenever I see them go to school in the morning, I just thank God for GD." (Occupation: Small business)
