Junior
received a $237 initial payment.
"For the passed years, I have been living in a very deplorable house. The roof of my house have made me and my family to be uncomfortable during the rainy seasons. We have to place pans under the placesthat are leaking to stop the spread of water flows. Because of this, I have planned to wait for my second transfer before I take my transfer out of my account because I need to change the roof over my house to have a better place to stay with my family in the future. Through the same transfer, I be able to pay people to do the job. Moreover, my son is also in the10th grade, I was thinking about how to get his tuition when I receive the transfer. I am so much happy because it is through the transfer I wss able to pay his tuitions and give him a better future."

I also bought two goat for KES 9000.00, bought some building materials for KES 10500.00 with an aim of constructing a new house for my children. Thereafter, I bought a mattress for KES 2500.00 because my children had none. Lastly, I bought a smaller solar for KES 6000.00 for lighting."

Sidi
received a $474 initial payment.
"Raising my children alone after my husband passed has not been an easy task but seeing them grow everyday and having a promising future is what keeps me going. I am a peasant farmer and previously, I used to depend on farm produce which has now become a nightmare due to the prevailing drought. Having one meal per day became our new norm because I cannot afford to provide three meals per day with the meager wages that I earn from fetching water and selling firewood. Although my major goal was to build a house for my family because the one that we live in is in a very poor condition, I have been wanting to start rearing livestock and poultry because I can sell them on bad days and pay bills. Being enrolled into the program was a good opportunity for me to chase my dreams as I spend KES 29000 of my first transfer to buy iron sheets and other building materials, KES 3000 to buy a goat and KES 1200 to buy chicken. I spend the balance to buy enough food for the month and settle debts that I had. I'm looking forward to spend my next transfer to build a house and buy more livestock and I will then have achieved my goals."

Jumwa
received a $474 initial payment.
"My husband passed last year after being hit by motorbike. Since then, life has not been easy for me and my nine children as I am the sole provider. I am a peasant farmer and given that drought has hit us for the last three years, I had to look for casual jobs be it doing laundry, fetching water, cutting trees for charcoal burners to provide basic needs for my family. With an average daily wage of KES 100, I couldn't manage to save our crumbling house which is a disaster in waiting. We have been staring at the danger but there is nothing much I could do about it rather that elevating poles to support the house. During enrolled, the officer asked me what my goals were and I didn't hesitate to say "building a house". Although he didn't say anything about it because he insisted that the transfers were unconditional and he couldn't make decisions for me, I could tell that he was shocked by the condition of my house. I spend KES 28000 to buy iron sheets which I believe will be enough to roof a two bedroom house that I'm planning to build, KES 6000 to clear fees arrears and spend the balance on food and other basic needs. I'm happy that I expecting my last transfer this month so that I can finally build a house and get out of this danger."

"I was busy cutting trees so I could start manufacturing charcoal when I got a message confirming that I had received funds from give directly. I immediately called my husband who works in a different town to inform him of the good news. He was very excited as I was and advised me to wait until he returned home so we could plan together the best way to use the funds. I did so and a week later he was home, so, we decided to buy a motorcycle 4 easy locomotion like taking the children to school and going to fetch water."

Sharon
received a $474 initial payment.
"I am a mother of five and a water vendor for the past 10 years. From this, I normally get up to KES 200 a day which is majorly spent on household expenses.
Not long after receiving the transfers, I became sick and the diagnosis showed that I had a blood shortage hence the need for more blood in my body. I was therefore forced to spend KES 35, 000 of the transfers on my medication.
Secondly, I spent KES 14,000 on two goats. This is because they grow fast and can be sold later for a dairy cow.
Thirdly, I spent KES 4000 on a bag of maize which can sustain me for the next two months. Initially, my household budget was KES 400 but has currently been reduced.
The rest I have saved for food purposes. This is because after my diagnosis I am required to eat special diets which are quite costly."
