"I am a motorcycle rider offering taxi services in and outside the village, When GiveDirectly promised us the unconditional transfer I saw it as an opportunity for me to upgrade the house that I was living in, it was in a bad shape but I was unable to build a decent one due to financial constraints. I embarked on planning on how I was going to spend, my wife and I agreed that we were going to build a decent house because the one that I had was old and small. therefore I used KES 35,000 in constructing a house, I then used KES in clearing the fee arrears. I am so thankful for the support that changed our lives." (Occupation: Motorcycle or bicycle taxi)

"The biggest difference in my daily life is that I was able to pay back the debt that I had borrowed from my friend to pay school fees for my son. When my son was joining college we didn't had some money. I do small scale farming at home. Our place is a semi-arid the harvest is so small and it's only for consumption. I did not had an extra crops to sell. My spouse is a motorcycle taxi operator. The money that he always gets is so small and it's for school fee and other basic household items. We had no extra money to clear the debt. This was not giving us peace of mind. When I received the transfer from GiveDirectly, I decided to pay the debt of KES 25,000. Currently we are so grateful and happy. We have peace of mind to do other activities without being stress up. We have devoted much of our time on doing activities that generate income to pay the school fees. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has changed our lives to be much better than before." "Lack of employment is a major concern. I was unable to clear my wifes' dowry contributing to her having to go back to her maternal home. I am a motorcycle rider, on a good day I earn about Ksh 400 which I use to support my parents. I have siblings who are in school who I assist in paying their school fees. With all these responsibilities this income is not enough." (Occupation: Motorcycle or bicycle taxi)

"I spent KES 19,000 to purchase an ox for ploughing farm. I had desired to improve my farming by cultivating a larger portion but I could not because I was using my hands to till my farm, it was tiresome and time-consuming. I was able to harvest one bag of maize from the half-acre portion that I was ploughing. With this harvest, it was not enough to feed my family of 3 members for a whole year. Using the ox that I acquired with my transfer, I will be able to cultivate a larger portion of land hence harvesting sufficient food. Similarly, I am planning to hire it out to my neighbors to earn a living of KES 2000 per acre that prepare with the ox-plow. I also used KES 5,000 to purchase nice clothes for each member of the family this is because we had few clothes to change. In addition, I spent the remaining amount to purchase households utensils and foodstuffs for the family." (Occupation: Motorcycle or bicycle taxi)

"My shop business closed down after I used all my savings to pay school fees for my children. For the past five years, I have always wanted to revive it but lack of capital is a challenge. As a motorcycle taxi operator, I cannot provide for a family of fifteen and save at the same time. These transfers will see me reopen my retail shop in the village. Running it will generate a stable source of income for my family." (Occupation: Motorcycle or bicycle taxi)

"The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have bought a heifer. I always buy milk from my neighbors and it's so costly for me since I do not have a continuous source of income. I do small scale farming and the harvest that I get is only for consumption. I do not always get surplus to sell. My spouse is a motorcycle taxi rider. He brings home little money, which we spent on paying school fees for our children in secondary school and collge. We had no savings at all. We had wish to own a dairy cow but it was not possible because we had no extra money. When I received money from GiveDirectly we decided with my spouse to purchase a heifer. When it produce in the next few months, we will no longer buy milk. We would have cut the daily cost. The money which we could have used to buy milk, we will save to meet other family needs. I am so grateful because were it not GiveDirectly I could not have own a dairy cow." (Occupation: Motorcycle or bicycle taxi)

"The future looks bright and promising with the transfer that I received from GiveDirectly, my life is different now than it would have been if I never received the transfer, in that I was able to start a goat rearing project which I am hopeful that I would be able to earn an income, I can also sell some to offset few whenever the need arises. In addition to that, I was able to buy a donkey that will assist me in carrying water from the stream. I am grateful for the support that gave me a reason to be happy, my life has been lifted to a higher level in society." (Occupation: Motorcycle or bicycle taxi)

"I spent KES 35,000 of my transfer to purchase building materials including 20 iron sheet, 60 buildings pole, nails, and timber. This was for the construction of a new decent house for my family. Similarly, I set aside KES 7000 to pay the contractor for labour cost. Previously, the house that I had was grass thatched, leaks and about to collapse. It was very risk to my family members and always worried that it may fall anytime. I also bought a bed and mattress for KES 11,500. Back in the days, I was sleeping on the floor with my small child using old sacks. This was not comfortable and the worst moments of my life because my small child developed skin rashes due to the maggots on the floor. The remaining amount assisted me in purchasing enough food for the family." (Occupation: Motorcycle or bicycle taxi)
