"I spent part of my first transfers in buying some seats and a table. For so long, I have been having a living room with no seats nor a table and to some point, I did not see its purposes as it was not in use. I also used part of the remaining amount in buying school uniforms for my children so as to improve their self esteem as the ones they had were torn and they were always uncomfortable wearing them. I spent the remaining amount in paying school fees for my child in high school since I had some arrears which I did not want to accumulate as it would be difficult for me to clear them."

"I am now a happier parent as I know that my children will not be sent back home to fetch school fees this year hence they will have enough time to concentrate on their studies unlike before when they used to come home almost every week. The thought of it makes my heart brightened as I view my children as an investment since I know that they will one day come and help me if they get a quality education."

"Apart from being able to pay school fees, I have never gone without food ever since I started receiving these transfers. Before the transfers, I used to depend on casual work which really gave very little income. This could not enable me to meet all my family needs and demands. Sometimes, we would forgo food just to solve other financial matters of the house like school fees and medication. The transfers have enabled me to plan well and since then, I have never missed any meal. My children are in good health and we are very happy because we always have food on the table."

"I spent part of my first transfer on buying iron sheets and other building materials enough to construct a new house since the one I was sheltering in was in a bad state and I could not stay comfortably with my family. It was leaking in times of rains and because I didn't have money, I could not renovate it, for the small income I was earning from casual jobs went to food of which it was also inadequate. So building a new house was a priority after I received my first transfer. I also spent part of it to pay for school fees for my son and daughter who are in high school. Though I paid partly, It has created some time for me to look for more money to clear fees as they will be continuing with their studies undisrupted. I spent the remaining amount on buying new school uniforms for them and their siblings who are still at the lower levels of education. It is only GiveDirectly money that has enabled me to accomplish this, for my small income could not sort all of these needs. My children are at peace in their respective schools, all thanks to GiveDirectly."

"All of my children are better fed these days and are able to attend school with less disturbance. I feed them with well-balanced diet food and most importantly, we get regular meals as I use the money I receive to buy foodstuff. I am able to pay school fees on time and hence they can now learn and study all the time of the school term. This has really stabilized my thoughts and I am so happy to be in this Cash transfer program.."

"I spent part of my first transfer to purchase enough stock to run my shop. Operations were not good since I was going through hard times and it was nearly collapsing due to inadequate capital to restock it, for it was the only source of income and also the source of school fees that I paid for my son who was in high school. I nearly closed my shop due to inadequate stock and lost hope of reviving it again to a better position, however, it is through GiveDirectly that it has brought life again to my shop by enabling me to increase stock to earn a good profit. I also purchased three goats to keep so as to have some assets of my own and I am hopeful that through them I will be able to educate my children in the future. I used the remaining amount to pay school fees for my son who had completed his form four but was unable to collect his certificates due to the huge arrears that he had when he completed his high school. Thanks to GiveDirectly for I never knew that I would be able to clear his fees arrears in order for him to collect his certificates."

"I am a casual laborer as well as a saloon business. I have always been relying on this for my household daily basic needs and my child school fees. Since I have not fully established my saloon business, It is unstable sources of income. I only do it when am called upon by my known customers to me. I also rely on low paying irregular casual jobs. I always find myself spending all the earning from both casual jobs and saloon business on my household basic needs, items and on my child school fees and requirements. I currently see my life to be different from how it was four months ago in that I can currently saving something for future use and this has given me a hope of putting up a saloon kiosk to help me expand and make it more regular income generating business."

"I spent my second transfers to pay school fees for my children, to start a charcoal selling business, to buy food for my household, and finally I purchased two goats for rearing here in my homestead. I started a charcoal selling business because with business I can sustain my income. I will buy charcoal here in Kilifi county and resell in Mombasa county. It is quite a profitable business. I also hope that the two goats I bought can procreate and give me wealth and income in future."
