"When I received my first transfers, I took part of it as tithe since I knew that the money was Gods blessings through GiveDirectly. I spent part of the remaining amount in buying doors and windows to complete the construction of my house which I had left it incomplete for long due to lack of enough money. I also spent part of the remaining amount to buy some seats and a table since I did not have any and I did not want my sitting room staying empty. During the festive season, so many people usually buy new clothes. I am happy as my family was not an exception this year as I was able to buy them some clothes. I spent the remaining amount to pay school fees for my children."

"I have been living in a one-room house which usually acts as a kitchen, bedroom and living room for my family. Culturally, my husband and I cannot sleep with our children in the same room since they are now grown-ups. This has always made them sleep at my neighbor's house and I have not been comfortable with it because of their security. When I received my first transfers, I saw the need of building a bigger house which can accommodate my all family members. Almost everyone in our region had already planted their farms except my family and a few others. This prompted me to use part of the money to buy maize seeds, fertilizers and in paying a tractor to till my farm so that I would also be a bar with others. I spent part of the remaining amount of-of money to buy food for my family and to pay school fees for my children since only three weeks were remaining before the school opens and I had no money to use in paying their school fees"

"My new goals in the next four months are to start a poultry keeping project. I'm planning to buy twenty hens for a start. This project will enable me to earn an income from the sales of eggs to meet the basic needs of my family and even to save some amount to pay school fees for my daughter in secondary school. I'm also planning on borrowing loan from the women enterprises fund to start a business of a Mpesa shop. Repaying this loan will not be a big challenge in that I will use the money I get from the sales of milk, eggs and from the commission I will be getting from Safaricom."

"I have a three acres farm but previously I couldn't plow the whole of it since I used to dig manually because I couldn't afford the cost of hiring people to plow the farm. The moment when I received the first transfer I bought both two oxen and an ox plow which I currently use to cultivate my farm. I'm happy I'm able to cultivate the three-acre farm thus expecting improved produce which can last my family for the whole year. In addition to that, I bought a steel door to replace the broken wooden door I had previously which was not safe because I feared that anyone could attack us, especially at night. My two children too sat for the National secondary examinations two years ago, but they had not picked their certificates from school because they owed the school a lot of money. I, therefore, used part of the transfer to settle a bigger portion of the school fees arrears and planning to clear the rest of the arrears with part of the second transfer so that they can join college."

"The biggest difference in my daily life in the last four months preceding the current transfer is that I used to struggle so much to pay my college fees. My spouse does not have a continues source of income and he could do odd jobs and save the little money he could get to pay the college fee and this was affecting my college performance because at times I could be sent home to collect the fees. After we started receiving the transfer our lives have really changed. We could combine the transfer with my spouse and pay the college fee on time. My performance improved very well and I was able to graduate and currently I have secured a job at the nearest primary school near home. We are so grateful because right now we are planning on building a spacious house for my family which was not possible before due to payment of school fees."
