"I am a housewife depending on my spouse who is a palm wine tapper. In a week he can earn KES 500 because he shares the proceeds with the owner of the palm trees. This has posed a lot of difficulties to provide the basic needs of the household. As a result, I have been forced to do some casual jobs such as washing clothes and fetching firewood and water for a fee so as to contribute to our income. All of the proceed for my spouse and I goes into buying food alone. Therefore, I consider financial instability as my biggest challenge."

"I have a family of four with my mother and two younger siblings also depending on me for most of their needs. I earn an average of 5000 KES monthly but sometimes gets lower or higher depending on the month. As a mason another factor that badly affects our work is availability of water which determines whether people build houses or not; remember this place is drought for 80% of the year. My wife hasn't been economically involved in any way and that worries me too because my first born is already four years old but can't join preschool because we do not have the money. When I get this money I want to first take my child to school then start saving together with my wife to raise some money so that she starts a business. This way we shall have increased our income and also be in a position to get more to even tackle other projects like building a house bigger than the one room we currently occupy."

"I'm a mason targeting construction jobs in the village which are normally averagely low. But what hurts my efforts most is the unfavorable climatic conditions that affects availability of jobs in this industry. People tend to avoid these type of projects during dry seasons to cut off the unnecessary cost of buying water when they can wait for rainy season. And it's also such a wide time gap between those seasons which sadly reduces my earning."

"Lack of food is a big challenge in my family as my husband only depends on livestock rearing which of late has been affected by droughts leading to water shortages and lack of pasture for the livestock. This has taken a big toll on us such that affording three meals a day is no longer a routine."

"My main occupation is livestock rearing and it has been the source income for the past 15 years. Due to the drought we experienced last year some of my livestock died but thank God the rains came in time and there is plenty of pasture and water in the village. Upon receiving this money I plan to buy two goats at a total of cost 2,0000 KES on monthly basis then I can exchange them for cattle in future. This will serve as a fixed assets and source of income for my family of eight. I will also spend some money on school fees for my 4 children who are in primary school. The rest of the money will be spent on food."

"You cannot imagine the joy I have now knowing that I do not have to wake up very early in the morning to go look for water. I just have to walk a few steps and fetch the water in need. It has been pouring and luckily we have a small pond that accumulates water. I am happy that for the next couple of weeks I will not have to hustle for water."

"After experiencing a drought last year, I realized there is a need for savings. If we had money, it would have helped us to buy food and water. That said, I would like to but some chicken and save some money after I sell them at a later date. This money will help us buy some commodities on a rainy day or even pay school fees."

"My dream has been to construct a decent spacious irony roofed house for my family. The one I owned was very small without a room which was not enough to fully accommodate my family of 7 members. Similarly, I was using it as a kitchen and bedroom at the same time. I spent KES 35,000 to purchase the building materials as well as pay the labour costs. In addition, I used the remaining amount to support the education of my 4 children by purchasing school uniforms and clearing part of the fee arrears. They were going to school putting on slippers and casual clothes which were very humiliating whenever I escorted them to school. Furthermore, I repaid my bicycle for KES 3000. It broke down one year ago, but I was not able to repair it. It was very helpful during the drought season because I was using it to carry water for the family."

"The biggest difference in my daily life is that through the transfer, I was able to connect tap water to my house waiting for the meter gadgets for water to flow to my house. With this, I will be having a steady supply of water for my house consumption as well as sell them to my neighbors. Additionally, I currently own a separate kitchen from my main house all this was accomplished with the help of the transfer. I am very grateful for the transfer."

"I heard the good news about the transfer when I was at the dam fetching water for my family's use. Some of the villagers were narrating how they received the transfer that GiveDirectly officers promised during the enrollment stages. I was very anxious to know if I had received it too since we were enrolled at the same time. I handed over my phone to one of the relatives who checked it and informed me that I had received the transfer. I was very happy for receiving the transfer knowing that I will be able to accomplish my desires."
