"The biggest challenge we are facing currently is the flooding that has affected our village. The flooding has led to the death of our 6 chickens and destruction of our house. This has become a big challenge since we are forced to start over and yet we don't have enough money to do so. This has made life very difficult."

"We have about twenty goats, five sheep and ten chickens. They can be sold to provide us with extra income during difficult times. The chicken also lays eggs which have a ready market. This has been the main source of happiness for our family."

"I have been relying on selling chewing sticks as a source of income, but I have never earned enough to meet the needs of my family of five. First and foremost, fulfilling their essential needs like food, clothing, and education has always been the most challenging aspect for me. Therefore, I came up with the idea of investing in livestock so that, in the future, life can improve. With the recent cash, I managed to buy three goats and three chickens for $102. As time goes by, these animals will multiply, ensuring that my children can study comfortably without any hindrance. Additionally, whenever I experience financial constraints, I will be able to sell one or two animals to solve the problem. In the future, I plan to exchange some of these goats for a dairy cow so that I can get milk to sell, thereby doubling my income. In my opinion, these are well-thought-out assets that will help me soon."

"When I received my final transfer, my daughter had been sent home for several days due to unpaid fees. I had arrears of $340, and I used $200 from the transfer to reduce the debt. Raising fees has been a struggle; I’ve relied on fundraising, sometimes crop production, which is unpredictable, and occasionally charcoal sales. With my second transfer, I bought 15 chicks with the aim of diversifying my income, but I didn’t have anywhere else to keep them but in our house. With my final transfer, I spent $60 to buy a ready-made chicken coop.  In order to remember GiveDirectly's support, I bought a sheep for $45. This will serve as a lasting memory in my home. I had other needs, but since I had received all the transfers, I wanted to buy something that would be a permanent reminder in my home. I will keep the sheep, allowing the number to grow and ensuring their continuity. Additionally, I spent $60 on food. I had nothing when I received the cash, and since it was during the dry season, putting food on the table was almost impossible. Further, I used the remaining amount to buy clothes for my five children and my husband. We hadn't bought clothes in the last four years. We’ve been surviving with the old clothes we had, valuing the gift of life above all. Thank you, GiveDirectly; your support will forever be remembered in our home."

"I have seen the hustle and bustle that comes with educating children. It is not a walk in the park. I want to be ready to get my children educated without so much of a strain. My main plan is cattle. Buying goats and chicken builds towards owning cows. I now have cow and 5 goats. I want the number of the goats to increase so I can sell those goats and buy more cows and in turn achieve my long dream of educating all my children."

"I now have, 5 goats, 17 chicken and 1 sheep. All this animals are savings. unlike your normal savings animals grow, mate and give birth to more animals. I am so excited to grow my flock to even more animals. This will mean that my children even after the project ends can go to school, it also means I can restart my business or add my investment even when I meet hurdles. I am a very happy woman."

"Among the things I am mostly greatful for is the transfers I receive from Givedirecty. They got me at a time when I was just thinking of starting a business and was renting out tools for my small start up business. I have over time been able to purchase my own equipment and now I am able to finance the expansion using the transfers. I have spent $39 buying materials to make pieces which I will sell to my clientele. I have also been able to but two goats, 2 chicken and food for my family at $50, $9 and $4 respectively."

"I am a motorcycle taxi rider for hire. I do not own my own motorcycle. I do not make much since most times the cash I get from the business goes to service charges as well as daily charges to the motorcycle owner. I would like to increase my income and I know this is only possible by buying my own motorcycle. I am buying goats and chicken which I will eventually sell and use the money to get a motorcycle of my own. I can see this dream being fulfilled thanks to receiving transfers as I now have 5 goats and 5 chicken."

"I now have two main goals, on is to enroll for college and the other is to finish building my house. I am currently capitalising on chicken rearing as a way of building my cash reserves so that when I enroll for school, I have animals to sell from which I will be able to raise my school fees. I have also budgeted for my cash to be used to build my house even as I clear my school fee debt. I am very thankful and hopeful that I will achieve my goal thanks to Givediretly."

"Receiving the cash transfers means so much to me and my family because it will help us improve our lifes a great deal. For the first cash transfers I intend to use KES 14,000 to pay for my four children's school fees. For the remaining amount I intend to purchase food stuffs for my family. For the second and third cash transfers I intend to pay school fees using KES 60,000 of the cash transfers. This will help me reduce the fees arrears I have of about KES 120,000. With the remaining amount I plan to start a chicken farming of about 30 chicken. This will be my investment which would help me pay for school fees and also support my family financially."
