"The biggest difference in my daily life is that before I used to worry about where we would get our daily meals from. We would go the whole day with nothing to eat, and the night too. But thanks to GiveDirectly, I bought food (a sack of maize and beans) that will last us a very long time and perhaps see us through this biting famine in our area." "Well, there is a big difference in my life in that I am now able to have multiple sources of income. My life was very hard to tell you the truth. I have a farm but as of now there is no rain and nothing is growing on the farm anymore. Finding water is very hectic I have to walk for long hours approximately four hours and above to water sources. Buying water is expensive. With this money, I will be able to save and buy a motorcycle that will help in fetching water and also sell to make a living."

"I have a motorcycle which I bought on credit. I used to use it to supply milk from my cows before the drought hit. With the onset of the drought, my income went down drastically. The credit institution was threatening to take back the motorcycle because I could no longer pay the KES 2,400 required every month. I decided to start a small business of selling charcoal in August after selling three of my cows. I was able to get KES 20,000 from the charcoal sale which I used to reduce the loan amount. The business is doing well. I am now saving up from the business so that I can clear the remaining amount."

"Receiving this money means I can buy my motorcycle and use it to ferry charcoal to the market. Currently, I don't have a motorbike and I have to borrow from colleges at KES 500 per day. The profit I get I have to pay for the motorbike and fuel also. This makes me end up getting fewer returns of KES 3000 per trip. I am assured of good returns of KES 6500 per trip with my new bike, this will help me cater to my need and invest the rest profit in goat farming." (Occupation: Motorcycle or bicycle taxi)

"I was over the moon because it was the perfect timing because my children could finally go back to school because seeing them home was very much stressful for my husband and I. My husband provides for our family by working as motorcycle taxi driver in another town and he most times sends money but also sometimes he has rough days and plus the money is barely enough to take care of himself and include us which is me and my four kids back in the village."

"My husband is a motorbike taxi rider and he has been employed by someone because he does not own one. He makes KES 600 daily and out of this KES 400 goes to the owner. He is left with KES 200 which we spend to buy food leaving us with nothing. My desire and that of my husband has been to buy our motorcycle but that has remained a dream because of financial constraints. I plan to buy a second-hand motorbike worth KES 70000 so that my family can sufficiently eat from my husband's sweat. Receiving this money will give my husband the self-employment he has yearned for so long."

"Since I have knowledge with the mechanics to motorcycles I had been wanting to open my own business because previously I used to borrow tools from a colleague. With the money I managed to open my own shop for fixing motorcycles and so I needed to get some tools to assist me in my shop. I managed to purchase an air pump for the tyres which went for five hundred kenya shillings, a pair of side mirrors costing two hundred and fifty kenyan shillings, a clutch cable which went for one hundred and fifty kenyan shillings and a box of tyre patches which accumulated to three hundred kenyan shillings. Meanwhile the transport to and fro was three hundred kenyan shillings of which I added from my personal savings."

"I delayed in seeing the message because my phone was charging but after noticing it, I was very happy because two days prior I had incurred some minor injuries due to a motorcycle accident that I was involved in and this meant that I could take my self to hospital and get treatment and also assist in fixing the damages to the motorcycle because this is where I earned my living and helped in taking care of my family with."
