"Depending solely on charcoal business has made it difficult to get enough income to satisfy the family's needs. This is because it is unreliable in the sense that we get little from the business and this is after very hard work. My husband transports charcoal to town, over 100 kilometers away using a motorcycle only to get KES 2,000 in a week. He comes home after two or three days hovering around town looking for customers."

"We live in a 0.1 acre piece of land that is inadequate for us to do farming. After we had constructed the housing structures, a very small space was left for us to cultivate. Receiving this money means that I will be able to buy 0.2 acres of land for KES 70000 for cultivation purpose. This new land will offer me an opportunity to grow both short term and long term crops like vegetables and maize respectively. As a result, I will have reduced expenditure on food in the long run. I also intend to use the remaining amount of my transfer to buy a dairy cattle and extend the size of my house." (Occupation: Motorcycle or bicycle taxi)

"Sometimes in June, we purchased a motorcycle on loan. We paid weekly. There has been a paradigm shift in terms of the income we get since we acquired it. We make up to KES 700 in a day and we are able to buy food and at the same time repay the loan. It boosted a lot our source of household disposable income." (Occupation: Motorcycle or bicycle taxi)

"Lack of a stable source of income is the main challenge that I am facing. Imagine having someone depending on you and there is nothing you can give. This is the situation I am facing currently. My wife is expectant, she has not job and cannot work because of her condition. The only thing she relies on is my job as a motorist. What makes more sad is that most of the time, I do not get my commission because there are no clients to carry since there are very many motorbikes in the village. This has made life more difficult for me. My dream is to start my own business that will help me get money to meet the basic needs of my family. Upon receiving the cash transfer, I will prioritize starting a hotel business which does very well in my village. This will cost me 30000 KES. I will then use the remaining amount to buy food and ten goats that I will keep and sell when they multiply." (Occupation: Motorcycle or bicycle taxi)

"I am a senior bachelor with a family of one child. My wife was taken back to her matrimonial home by her parents because I had not paid dowry. She left with my son who is two years old. This has given me a lot of stress because I have to send money every month to take care of the child unlike when we were still together. I am supposed to pay a dowry of 75000 KES. However, raising this money has been almost impossible. I am a motorist who has been hired to work for someone in order to get money. In a day, I can only make 500 KES. This is not daily because sometimes you may get less than that. My desire is to get back my wife and child home so that we can help each other. Upon receiving this money I will, I will pay 25000 KES to my inlaws so that I get back my wife. I will then use the remaining amount to start a business." (Occupation: Motorcycle or bicycle taxi)

"I spent KES12000 repairing my husband's motorcycle that had been sidelined with a mechanical problem for far too long which made things more difficult for us. This is because the motorcycle used to help us in fetching water since we have to travel very far to get water and hiring the services of a motorcycle taxi is very expensive and unaffordable to us. Therefore, repairing the motorcycle was a very huge relief to us, as well as an investment because we can offer motorcycle taxi services to other people. I kept aside KES25000 to buy some goats when the current drought and famine subsides because it is very risky to keep livestock in this state of the climate and I would not want to throw away my investment."

"I am a motorcycle rider and I was going on with my daily routine when I heard a message notification on my phone. My heart was filled with joy upon checking its contents as it was a Mpesa message indicating that I had received the promised money from GiveDirectly. I called my spouse and informed her about the goodness that had just come in and she was equally overjoyed. I would have stayed at home and relaxed as a way of celebrating that day but I saw an opportunity of making more money on that day since I knew that so many people would go and withdraw their transfers." "It was around 10 am and I was busy on my kitchen garden weeding when I suddenly heard my neighbors celebrating giving thanks to GiveDirectly. I quickly got out of my farm and I went to check my phone which I had left it charging in the house. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the message saying that I had received KES 55000. I was so happy and I called my husband who had stepped out to work. He was so happy when I told him the good news that he decided to come back home to confirm the good news for himself." "I bought a motorbike 4 months ago on loan and I was able to deposit an amount of KES 15000 out of the KES 118000 required. I, therefore, plan to use KES 20000 of my transfer to reduce the debt. I will then spend KES 25000 to build a spacious 2-roomed iron-roofed house since I plan to marry and start up a family next year, hence the need for a more spacious house. my job as a motorcycle taxi driver is less paying, hence I will use all my KES 50000 second transfer as capital to initiate a business of buying milk from the neighborhood and selling at a profitable price to the milk cooperative. Engaging in these two income-generating activities will ensure improved income for my household." (Occupation: Motorcycle or bicycle taxi)
