"My husband works as a casual labourer at a textile factory in Mombasa but the earnings he gets are not enough to meet all our needs such as food, school fees etc. Water scarcity and low rainfall in the area has rendered as more hopeless as food prices have now risen and we also have to pay more to access water for drinking and other household needs."

"Receiving this money means acquiring some cows that we shall rare in order to act as an investment for the household. The cows in the future will multiply, some sold in order to pay school fees for our children not forgetting meeting other household needs. Currently, we have to work on other people's gardens in order to raise income for the household. "

"The biggest difference in my daily life in the last four months preceding the current transfer is that I pay school fees for my children on time and they are no longer sent home. Before I could do casual jobs of cultivating peoples farms but the amount I was getting was so small and could not meet all my needs and to pay school fees at the same time. Currently, I no longer spend much of my time doing those casual jobs. I have started to work on my own farm. I do horticulture farming and I sell the produce at the market to pay part of the school fees balances and also meet other expenses. I also have time to bond with my family. Before there was no time due to much of the casual jobs and I would feel exhausted in the evening. All I wanted was to rest."

"My life is currently different from how it was four months ago in that I have been able to clear paying school fees for my children in secondary school. "I have been buying milk on a daily basis since I sold the cow I once owned in order to clear my children's school fees. Currently, I am a proud owner of a dairy cow which I bought using the savings I was given at our merry go round group. I believe that very soon, apart from saving the money I would otherwise use in buying milk, I will be earning an income through the sale of milk at our nearby shopping centers. Being able to own a dairy cow once more is the biggest difference in my daily life in the last four months preceding the current transfer."

"I have realised very many improvements through GiveDirectly in that I constructed a three roomed permanent house. Prior to receiving the transfer, I was living in a small thatched house. In addition to this, I paid school fees for my two children. In the past, I had to sell food crops to try and raise school fees. Yet this was not a lucrative venture. Nevertheless, I am very grateful that GiveDirectly came to my aid."

"Previously, my children used to be sent home for school fees frequently. This really affected their performances but I had no option because my casual job was not generating adequate income. Upon receiving this transfer the biggest difference in my daily life is that I was able to settle the school fees arrears and now my children are confidently going to school with no worries of being sent home for school fees and their performance has improved so well."
