"I spent part of my first transfer on buying four goats as my assets. I decided to buy goats because they are cheap compared to other domestic animals, they reproduce twice a year, they mature faster and they can be reared in any climate. I then bought some building materials, (iron sheets and building pole and some nails). I had been sleeping at my brother-in-law's house. This was so uncomfortable as I am a grown-up and minded about privacy which was not there at my brother inlaw's house as it was shared among many of us. While I slept at my brother-in-law, my children slept at their grandmother's house. This again was not sitting well with me as I could not watch them fall asleep. It hurts as a parent. Apart from suffering to put up a decent structure for my family, I was also struggling to pay their school fees and part of the money went to this course. At least they were able to study without being sent home like it was the norm."

"Before the coming of GiveDirectly, I was operating a shop in my village from which I used to sell a variety of products. When I received my first transfer, I added adequate stock to help me operate efficiently by meeting most of my customer's needs. I also had a bull and my aim was to get another one to make a pair. The cost of a bull at the moment is roughly KES 15000. I had already set aside part this amount from the transfer I got from Give Directly. The pair will help me to do timely farming hence improving my farm produce. Apart from that, I also used KES 10000 to pay for my children school fees. This will avoid interruptions that would have arisen due to late payment of the school fees. I spent the remaining amount to purchase foodstuffs and meeting other household expenses."

"I spent KES 45000 of my first transfer as start-up capital for a business of selling spare parts and at the same time running a garage in town. I employed my son who is able to run this business because he has the skills and expertise to run the garage. I purchased a variety of spare parts to stock in the garage for motorbikes and bicycles. I am glad that through this venture, I will be earning some cash besides the job that I do currently. I spent a portion of the remaining amount to pay for school fees for my children, also cater for my households needs and other expenses."

"Currently, my life is really different compared to the last four months. The consistent monthly transfer I have been receiving from GiveDirectly has made the school fees payment easy. I am no longer struggling too much to make my children comfortable in their school since the school management already know that I am GiveDirectly beneficiary and have been patient with me whenever am required to clear the school fees."

"My life currently has really changed. Comparing it with how it was four months ago, I can see a lot of good things which have come to be. Initially I was struggling to settle school fees at the same time settling my medical bills which was so hard. I am happy now that three of my sons and one daughter have comoleted their studies and waiting to graduate soon. Payment of school fees for the last son who is still in school has now become easier and seeking medication is also easier since I have been able to obtain a medical card which I have been funding every month."

"Financial indepencence is what this money means to me. My first priority is to buy a friessian dairy cow at ksh 45000 that will be my source of income upon selling milk daily hence the struggle of engaging in tedious casual jobs at my old age will come to an end. Practising poultry farming is my second plan upon receiving my second transfer. Selling poultry products will help supplement the income from selling milk hence improving my living standards. I will then build up savings from both projects that will latter enable me to construct a more spacious and comfortable house and also pay school fees for my two children, one in the university and another one in secondary school"

"My life is currently different because I am able to access money to fulfil my dreams even without having to depend on my husband for any financial support. I am able to buy food for our consumption and a lot of it even without having to work extra hard as a casual worker. I am now also able to buy livestock for rearing as financial security for the family. On the other hand, my children get a chance of staying in school and concentrating on their studies as I am able to settle their school fees right on time."

"My biggest hardship is lack of school fees for my children. If I educate my children, then they will get better life in future. I'm not educated and Iam interfaced with a lot of challenges."
