"Now that my house is beautiful after the plastering that I just did with my second transfer, with new seats that I also purchased using the same money, I have new plans. Before this program was launched in our village,I had plans of leaving to the capital city in search of employment so that I could pay my children's school fees and plaster my house which was not looking so good on the inside. This meant that my children were going to be home alone which is not a good thing considering their age which requires close supervision. With most of my problems solved, I have now cancelled all of those plans and will now stay close to my children."

"I was previously staying in a mudded house and my desire was to at least upgrade to a more permanent house. I had begun the process of renovating it but due to inadequate materials, I could not finish. Because of this, I took KES 36000 from my first transfer and purchased several bags of cement, sand, doors and windows to complete the renovation of my house. I purchased everything I required for the accomplishment of the rebuilding of my house. I spent the remaining amount to pay school fees for my child who had been sent home. I paid this money in advance so that my children would continue with their studies without any interruptions. This has given me adequate time to prepare for the next term."

"The biggest difference in my daily life is that I am at peace now because the money enabled me to clear the school fees for my children both in high school and primary level of education to avoid them being sent home for fees. I am glad that this has given me adequate time to prepare for the next payments unlike before when I used to pay for them late."

"I have been rearing indigenous goats since the demise of my husband 10 years ago. In 2017 I sold all my livestock for shopping and paying for school fees of my child who is in form 3 now. My intention was to restart my livestock rearing but this has never been achieved due to financial instability. Receiving this money means I will be able to start up goats rearing activity. I am planning to purchase 4 goats at 30 USD each. I will use the remainder for clearing school fees arrear for my children."

"My life is different from how it was in that I am no longer stressed like I used to be before I started receiving these transfers. As a widow, I had various needs to take care of. The main burden was paying school fees for my bright children who were in high school. The money really helped me to offset their fee balance. Today when they go to school I feel at peace because I paid school fees for the whole year. When they come back for their holidays, I am also not worried because I have enough food that I planted using the transfers."

"Since we started receiving the transfer from GD, we opted to pool part of our transfer as beneficiaries of Give Directly so that we can raise a good amount which would enable one to start a meaningful project or pay school fees. I received KES 10000 as savings which I spent on buying food for the family as we had none at the time when we receive the transfers. Apart from buying food, I also paid some school fees and bought school uniform for my children. Now I am happy that my children are looking good in their new uniform and they won't be sent home since I have cleared their school fees."

"I invested a large portion of my transfer on animal rearing. I bought two pigs and two dairy cows. I know that this is a good investment because I can sell milk in the future and sell the cows when circumstances force me. Apart from that, I also bought 10 pieces of iron sheets in readiness for starting the construction process. I still stay at my father's place but as per our tradition, I have to move out to give my siblings the chance to move out too. In addition to that, I paid school fees for my two children and bought enough food"

"Financial constraint to enable me educate my children is the biggest hardship that I face.My income of ksh.1500 from driving a taxi is the only income that my family of 12 relies on for food and other emergencies. The amount is so little to fend for school fees. As we speak, I owe the school ksh.25,000 which I am not sure when I will finish paying. This deficiency of finances has been the main cause for my son who was in form dropping out when he could no longer cope with the on and off situation anymore.I always wanted to educate my children up to college level but the reality that I am presently living is very sad for me since I fear they will end up struggling all their lives like I have been doing."

"The greatest difference in my life is that in the last few months, I do not have more burden of acquiring loans from the bank to support farming and paying school fees for my children. The monthly transfers which I receive from Give Directly are enough to support my farming projects."

"Being a single parent, all the needs of my family is all on me.I have children in school who require school fees among other needs within the household.I normally grow vegetables for sale and sometimes buy from neighbours to sell at a nearby market. However, this business does not provide me sufficient income to cover all these needs as well as improve my home.It has even become more difficult owing to long drought seasons that has affected crop production.Basically, the biggest hardship I have faced is lack of money to meet the needs of my family."
