"I got a loan and started building a 3 bedroom rental house but I was stuck because the money I had planned to finish the house was used to cater for my medical expenses after I got an accident with a motorcycle.
Receiving this money means I will finish construction of my rental house so that i can earn rents from tenants."

received a $485 initial payment.
"I spent KES30000 on paying for the dairy cow that my neighbor had given me to rear and milk for my children before he decided to sell. I had been keeping the cow for the past two years and can attest that it has been of great help to my family of seven since we could not buy milk at all whenever it was lactating. We had also been selling the surplus and using the outcome in sorting household bills. When the owner wanted to sell it out, we begged him to wait and was glad when I received the transfer as this became the first project that I had to spend on. I also bought school uniforms and paid school fees for my two children in the lower primary school that cost a total of KES11000, paid the medical bill for my son who was not feeling well at KES5000, obtained a new piece of furniture at KES2300, and also bought foodstuff enough for my household at KES3000. I am grateful to GiveDirectly for all that has changed in our home within a very short time and looking forward to the second transfer as I still have a lot more projects to initiate."

A used to be very embarrassing for my children and l, to even get food for my family used to be very difficult for me, I will work on people's farm the whole day just to get money to paid my children school fees. But with the help of givedirectly my life is improving, My new goal is to start a new business where in when givedirectly goes I will be able to paid my children school fees, support my family and provide good food for them."

"The transfer has brought a very big difference in our lives as a family. We were able to buy a cow with part of the transfer. With the cow, I no longer go out in the morning to purchase milk for preparing breakfast for my family. We hence no longer incur the cost of buying milk. We were also able to purchase a bag of maize which we are still consuming up to now. With fewer food costs, we have been able to save up the money that we make from the motorcycle business."

received a $486 initial payment.
"The huge dependency on livestock farming that even though had been on small scale had been so helpful in settling most if not all our financial obligations as a household. On receiving the first transfer, we had agreed to bring in another dairy cow to add to the two that we had been having on our farm. I was glad to secure a good breed from a neighbor who was selling at KES25000. This will see us increase the production of milk that will, in turn, boost our savings towards the school fees for my four sons. I also spent approximately KES28000 on the construction of a new house that will still be occupied by my two elder sons and later by all the four sons. They had been moving out to the neighborhood to find a space to sleep which would disadvantage them a lot since they could not do their evening studies. With the remaining amount, I obtained a sack of dry maize grains and other household goods that we had exhausted."

"We are living as a poligamy family. We were 3 women married by the same man. One of us was divorced and now we are 2. We are living in a 2 bedroom house and I have 5 children. I have been thinking how I could have a spacious house which could accommodate my family but has not been easy to achieve this. Our husband is a driver and his salary cannot sustain the needs of the house currently. I used to have plenty of food from my farm but because of the drought which has persisted for two years, my farm dried up and I have nothing to harvest. All of us depends on the salary of our husband.
Receiving this money means I will build another one bedroom house for my children. I will spend the first transfer to do this and the second transfer I will open a food business. I am living near a secondary school of which the students walk along distance to buy their lunch daily. If I start a food canteen just outside the gate in my land, I believe will make money because no one will be ready to go far searching for a commodity which is already available by the school gate."

"Our uncle gave us this piece of land to live on, this is making our lives difficult to invest in better housing. Upon receiving this money, I will use KES 80000 to buy 0.1 acres and build a better house. My husband is the sole breadwinner and depends on casual jobs to provide for us. He earns about KES 200 per day which is little to support us. This makes his dream of buying a piece of land impossible. With the remaining money, I will consider buying a cow to enable us to earn more income through the sale of milk."

"This is a great opportunity to change my life, I have been hoping to get soft loan from bank so that I can start my own shop, to help my community instead of travelling long distance to go the shopping center which is almost 45 minutes from our area.
Acquiring the loans has been very challenging, because most of the times I don't qualify because I don't even have savings but today God just sent his angel that at the beginning of the year am hopeful that soon I will receive my transfer and I won't need to worry about paying back.
My family will be better and we will be able to live our dreams."

"The biggest difference in my daily life now is that I am able to plan earlier in advance because of transfers despite the challenges that I have since Covid affected my motorcycle taxi business. This transfers allow me to budget for a couple of days for example I am able to buy food for like 3 to 4 days at ease unlike before I had to earn for daily needs, now I can save what I earn and can also relax since my family is comfortable for a couple of days."
