Charo
received a $11 initial payment.
"I work in the transport industry as a motorcyclist. Despite the challenges I go though at work, I always push myself and I get to earn around ksh30 daily. Unfortunately, the tyres of my motorcycle got worn out and I can no longer work. To purchase new ones has been a challenge for me. So, I opted to harvest coconut then sell them at the beach. This has enabled me to fend for my family. Even so, it has been a challenge to put food on the table for them. Therefore, when I received the ksh1200, I used it all to purchase a bundle of maize flour."

Kesi
received a $27 third payment.
"My parents are aged and unproductive and I am the only person whom they depends on since my other siblings works in a city far away and they do not have reliable jobs. I have been working as a motorcycle rider for a while and my dream has been to buy my own motorcycle because the Ksh 300 that I get as daily commission is not enough to cater for both my needs and those of my parents. I had lost hope because I couldn't afford to raise enough capital on my own nor take loan because I didn't have security to prove. When I was enrolled to the program, I thought of saving my daily commission and Ksh 500 from every monthly transfer to accumulate a reasonable amount and top up with loan so that I can buy a motorcycle. For the two months that I have been receiving the transfers, this has been possible because I usually spend Ksh 2500 to buy enough food to take us through the month. I spend Ksh 2500 of my last months transfer to buy food and saved Ksh 500."

Jumwa
received a $27 third payment.
"I am a mother of 10 children. Providing food for my family was the greatest challenge. Without employment and my husband working as a motorcycle taxi driver, feeding our family satisfactorily was demanding. The burden was relieved when I started receiving money from GiveDirectly. I used the recent transfer to buy food. Being a festive season, I bought food ( maize flour, rice, wheat flour) in bulk. My children were very happy. They celebrated like the rest households in the community."

Rono
received a $469 second payment.
"GiveDirectly did well because they uplifted the lives of many. I was able to purchase a motorcycle on hire purchase and a power saw machine. I hence no longer rely on casual employment to earn a living. The lives of the people in my community changed for the better since they were able to make many developments. Most people used to live in grass-thatched houses but they now live in houses that are roofed with iron sheets. I therefore urge them to continue with the same spirit of helping the needy."
