"I used KES 6000 of the last three months' transfer to renovate my house that had a shattered wall. I was afraid the condition could worsen that might have led us to construct a new house which is more costly and thus I opted for the renovation. My husband who is the main income earner does not make enough money from the casual work he does at the construction site and so it would have taken him ages to raise money for the renovation. KES 2000 I spent on foodstuffs for our household and bought three chickens worth KES 1000 for rearing. I am happy I was able to assist my husband with some of the household expenses."

"We have five children who are all in school, and we all depend on my spouse who works as a casual worker in one of the companies in town. I believe that his salary is not enough to sustain our needs because of how often I see him struggle and at times, end up in debts. When I received both the first and second transfer, I bought five chickens for rearing. They will be beneficial in the future after they have reproduced. I also bought foodstuffs worth KES 2000 and cleared the school fee arrears of KES 500 for my son who is in preschool. All these would not have been possible without the support, and we are thankful."

"I bought food worth KES 970 enough to sustain my family for some period before budgeting for more while the remaining KES 200 I spent on a chicken for rearing. I settled for a chicken because we did not have any, yet they are of help whenever an urgent need arises. Besides, chickens reproduce faster and have ready markets and thus, I will invest in more of them whenever I receive my transfers. My husband struggles to meet our family’s needs and so the income from them will be a boost to his construction work."

"Having purchased four chickens for rearing is the biggest difference in my daily life since I received the transfer. They give me the hopes of a better future since the income from them will be an additional income for our family. It is a lucrative business since they reproduce faster and have ready markets thus I will purchase more of them with the subsequent transfer. The profits we shall make from them, added to the small income from charcoal sales will be enough to sustain our needs and even save some."

"I am a secondary school student currently in form one. I am the fifth born in a family of seven. My parents are the ones who pay my school fees through their income from casual labor. My father earns a living through perennial jobs in the village while my mother burns and sells charcoal for income generation. My elder siblings dropped out of school due to a lack of school fees and are currently working as casual laborers to help my parents support the family. I am grateful to GiveDirectly for sending me the transfer that I used part of to reduce my school fee arrear. Through the transfers, I paid KES 2000 school fees and bought two ducks and two chickens for KES 1000 for investment. I am grateful to GiveDirectly for redeeming my hope in education."

"In all honesty, the first thing would buy is fertilizer. Depending on our farmland size I believe 4 bags would be sufficient to guarantee us a good harvest of more than 16 bags next season. As you know "food is life" so making sure that we have it sounds like the right thing to do with these funds for us. Having secured the fertilizer, we would go on and get ourselves some livestock, like I mentioned earlier goats or chickens would provide an ideal cushion if our maize harvest dwindles. "4 goats and maybe 5 chickens would be a good start we presume" she said while looking at her spouse who agreed with a nod. Agricultural life is unpredictable so yes we would like to broaden our choices in terms of backbone supports for our family whenever in need, that's why we plan on venturing into livestock farming with these funds. We can't put specific prices on these spendings because we have no idea how much they cost currently."

"I set aside some cash for joining tailoring school and besides that I was able to start a chicken rearing business. I keep free range chickens for sell and consumption as well. This has been a major boost to our meager income as a family and I'm hoping to expand in the future. I bought 8 more goats which i intend to resell once they are all grown. With the remaining amount,I sent my twin daughters to back school and also sought treatment for myself after breaking my leg in an accident."
