"In the next four months, I plan to buy a goat. I know that many farmers will be selling theirs to pay school fees. I will take advantage of this and acquire the goat using the last two transfers. The goats will help me save part of my transfers. Within a year they will have multiplied also hence making me financially better of than ever before."

"My additional goal is to continue paying school fees for my children. They are almost doing exams and I wouldn't want to fail them by not playing my part. The end year exams are very crucial because it was determined whether or not they will be promoted to the next class."

"I spent a larger portion of my transfer to pay for a plot of land that I have been leasing to farming on. It required me to pay for it every year to allow me to carry on with the farming. This was so costly for me meaning my returns on the farm were much affected. My intention was to buy it so that I could comfortably do farming on it thus when I received money, I managed to pay for the cost partly as I plan to repay the balance. In addition, I also, spent KES 9000 to pay for my children's school fees for them to be allowed to continue with their studies comfortably. Apart from these, I also spent KES 4000 to buy two goats for keeping. I made the decision to buy them since these are living assets that will soon reproduce thus have more which act as my financial security. I spent the remaining amount to buy foodstuffs for my family, household items and covering other expenses."

"I spent part of my transfer to purchase two cows at KES 30000. I have always had the desire to own them because they are assets that we can readily depend on. My children are still young and I am hopeful that through this livestock, their education will be taken care of. In addition, I will also be benefiting from the milk that these cows will be producing. I will sell the surplus and earn some cash. I am also in the process of constructing a new house because the one I was previously sheltering is in a bad state. Because of this, I spent KES 15000 to purchase 20 pieces of iron sheets and building poles to facilitate this process. I also spent KES 2000 to pay for my children school fees. I spent the remaining amount to cater for my other household expenses."

"I spent part of my first transfer on buying iron sheets, building poles, a metal door, and a few bags of cement to construct a new house. My previous house was very small and it could not accommodate us all. Apart from that, I also bought a dairy cow at KES 16000. I then cleared school fees for my children. I don't expect my husband to assist me because he is very old and we are ten wives I being the youngest. I finally spent the remaining amount of money to buy enough foodstuffs that would last us for a while."

"I spent part of my first transfer on buying a few pieces of iron sheets so that I can renovate my house. I later paid school fees for my children who have been staying home for a while due to the huge fee arrears. Some had even dropped out of school because they had been constantly sent home and the felt embarrassed and demoralized at the same time. I then bought some goats. I opted for them because they reproduce faster compared to any other livestock. I then hired a tractor to plough my farm so that at least this season I could increase my harvest. I spent the remaining amount to buy food and other household items for my family."

"I have always thought of a happy life and I am always determined to achieve this goal but due to financial constraints, I have never realized this. Despite all my struggles, I fell short in meeting some of the family needs like paying school fees and better housing for my children. At the moment, I owe my neighbor a loan of $200 that I borrowed to start my livestock business but the income is very low since we usually share any profit that is earned. Therefore, I consider the lack of a reliable source of income as my biggest hardship."

"The cash I received from GiveDirectly has enabled me purchase a bull which is a form of saving, I intend to sell it at the start of the next academic year so as to pay the children's school fees. Before getting this money, I majorly depended on the surplus food sales for paying school fees. The sales were not reliable and unable to sustain the family."

"I am very pleased that I cleared the huge outstanding debt burden. This enabled me recover my two pieces of farmland. Previously, I had limited farmland and this affected the food supply in the household. This debt accrued due to the loan I acquired so as to pay school fees."

"My children previously used the granary as their bedroom and they didn't have any comfort at all especially with the cold. It was worse during those days after harvesting since there was limited space they could sleep since it was a small granary. I am glad that when I received the second amount of the transfer, I built them their own house and they sleep more comfortably than before. I am also glad that I would not have to sell any of my pieces of land anymore to pay my children's school fees. Before GiveDirectly came, I had already sold a small piece of my land in order to pay their school fees and other school requirements. I am glad that that is not going to happen again because I paid a good amount of school fees upfront."
