Jumaa
received a $10 initial payment.
"I am a shopkeeper, selling water and charcoal in Mombasa town for someone else for daily pay. I am the firstborn son of a family of eight and still staying with my parents. Before I secured a job, we could only depend on my elder sister who sells fruits along the beach. I am happy that I currently support her in fending for the family using my income. The transfer from GiveDirectly enabled me to repay a debt of KES 400 and hence reducing my financial burdens. I used to get bothered by the person because I had stayed for so long without settling his debt. I also shared KES 300 with my parents to buy the food they had run out of. They used the money to buy corn flour to sustain them for some time. Lastly, I spent the rest of the money on clothes and a pair of shoes."

Philister
received a $441 second payment.
"The goal that I did not have before receiving the cash transfer is that I would wish to start a freshwater business. In our village we only have two taps and several dams, therefore I feel this business is so lucrative since the water points are very far from us. Therefore this will authorize me to earn a living considering that I am currently jobless."

Richard
received a $441 second payment.
"My new goal now is to focus on purchasing pipes for irrigation on my farm. I bought a water tank and I wish to start horticulture farming. Planting crops like tomatoes, potatoes, and beans. I have harvested the water and I wish to do irrigation on my farm. This will enable me to conduct horticulture farming throughout the year without being affected by the drought."

"My wife joined a saving club last year with a committee of paying 600 every Sunday. She was unable to regularly pay her dues to the saving club which led to the club confiscating her share of the savings.
The farm we rice farm we made this year has also been flooded with water, thereby destroying 75% of the rice. Against these backdrops, I am currently facing the challenges of no cash to care for my family"

Shadrack
received a $442 second payment.
"After spending all the transfers on the goals I had, I am still looking forward to making improvements, especially in furnishing the new house I constructed. Alongside the completion of the construction outlook, I also need a larger water tank to collect the rainwater from the roof during rainy seasons. I am glad that even though I have no money at the moment; I believe the running projects and the small savings I had been making will make the purchase possible."

Mwenda
received a $442 second payment.
"I do not have any other goal after accomplishing the main goals that I had. With the transfer, I was able to connect tap water to my house. At the moment, I am happy that we are able to get sufficient water for the family and no longer have to travel a long distance to get this precious commodity."

Chepkemoi
received a $442 second payment.
"I am a teacher by profession though still awaiting the government placement. I am married and blessed with two children. Fetching water from the stream has been a very cumbersome chore, this is because the stream is far from my home. Therefore, upon the receipt of my second transfer, my husband and I settled on purchasing a water tank worth KES 35,000 to harvest rainwater. I was unable to acquire a tank before due to financial constraints. Secondly, we started a poultry project where we used KES 15,000. I am so happy for the support that brought so much happiness into our lives."

Karisa
received a $10 initial payment.
"I've been struggling to support my family for the past three months since I can't seem to get a job. As the family's only source of income, I rely significantly on short contract jobs like constructing people's homes and collecting water. My family occasionally has to go to bed without eating because we don't have enough money to buy meals. The majority of my children are malnourished as a result of consuming less food, which has had a significant impact on their health. Consequently, when I got my first transfer, I used it all to purchase food for the family. I spent KES 1000 for five packets of maize flour and KES 120 on one kilogram of sugar. Purchasing food in bulk was sufficient to ensure that my family won't go hungry for the upcoming two weeks. As a result, I've been inspired to work harder and look for more sources of money so that I can provide for my family."

Tabu
received an initial payment.
"It was on a Friday at around 2.00 p.m. when I was on my way to fetch water when I received the message. I called my husband to come and check if the money was from GiveDirectly. He was at the center and immediately came home to help me ascertain if the money was from GiveDirectly. The good news of receiving my first transfer made me feel excited and happy because I did not expect it to be that soon."

"My second transfers which I received from GiveDirectly, I spent KES 10000 on buying a water tank for water storage in my compound since I had none. I then spent KES 20000 on buying heifer for rearing for milk production once it matures. The remaining amount, I spent on completing a house which was under construction. I am happy that we now live in a better house."
