"I spent $150 of the most recent transfer to acquire 10 tons of building stones. This was for the construction of a permanent two-roomed house for the family of 5 members and including my wife and me. This house that we own at the moment is a small, one-roomed mud-walled house which can not accommodate us with our household items. Moreover, I used $70 to pay part of the school fees for my 3 daughters who are in a private school. They had a huge fee balance that was making them be sent home regularly something that ate away my happiness. Also, I used $60 to get the required documents for the EMT(emergency medical technician) and first aid course that I had done earlier but I was yet to do the suitability test to get the required certificates. With the remaining amount, I bought water pipes to connect tap water to the household. This was to assist my wife who used to fetch water at a long distance something that made her complain of body pain every time."

"The new goal that I have at the moment is to connect tap water to my household. Currently, we are required to walk for over 5 kilometers to the neighboring village to get water for the family. In addition, I am planning to be selling the tap water to other villagers for KES 10 per 20 liters to earn an additional income. The money from the water vending will help me in meeting other basic needs like food. At the moment, I am using over KES 150 per day to purchase water for family consumption and our animals."

Nevertheless my husband coldest brother and wife hosted us for one year within that time my two big daughters and husband renovated the brunt house with thatch roof again and we moved back. "I completed the construction of a new house that I had started with the first transfer right after receiving the last transfer. I had a lot to fit on the walls, doors, windows, and also ceiling boards before buying a new piece of furniture. From the second transfer, I spent KES 38000 on making all the purchases and payment of the labor charges that completed the construction. It was a relief for me to put up a new structure that I moved in within a very short time with my family of four. I also connected the piped water after buying new pipes to convey the water from the source pipe installed by the country government to my doorstep. After spending KES 11000 to complete the entire plumbing work, I am glad that I am currently enjoying the use of tap water both for my livestock and for my household's consumption. I spent the remaining amount on buying new pairs of clothes for my children and a pair of shoes to replace the old ones I have been wearing."

"In my opinion, Givedirectluy did well in enrolling the poor households and sending them direct cash transfers. The fact that it was unconditional allows us to decide on how well to spend the transfers to better our living conditions. Through the transfer, I am happy that was able to relocate to my new place and our kids are near to school and no longer go to work late. Furthermore, I can access clean water for the family easily since we are living adjacent to water booths."

"since I was married I have always lived in a grass thatched house because we were not able to build a better one. When GiveDirectly gave us the money I was able to build a better iron sheets house. We now live in a decent and more spacious house with my family. We can harvest clean water from rain which was not the case before. We are so grateful because GiveDirectly has brought change and made us live a better life. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well."

"After utilizing the second transfer as per my plans, I developed another goal that I aim to accomplish. If I get some money, I want to fix tap water at my home. Currently, Freshwater is pricey and we have to move a longer distance to get it. Based on that, I developed a goal of fixing the same to reduce the cost of traveling since I have to hire a motorbike to fetch the water. Once I have a freshwater tap at home, it will be an opportunity for me to start a shop business because the ones who will be coming to fetch water will also require some items like personal effects and foodstuff."

"Through the transfers, I have been able to afford water for our household use and even reduced my children's school fees arrears. With the ongoing drought, there is scarcity of water that has led to an increase in price of the little that is available. We consume five jerrycans of water daily in our household and a jerrycan of water currently goes for KES 25. The money I earn from casual work can not sustain the needs of the nine of us, and I am thankful to GiveDirectly for the support. With the last three months' transfers, I paid KES 6000 in school to reduce the arrears my children owed the school. KES 3000 I spent on water for our household use."

"Before receiving the second transfer, I had planned to invest in livestock. Therefore, I bought three goats for KES 12000.00. I did this after seeing how the climate was. It was a dry season and cows could not cope with drought, unlike goats which are somehow drought resistant. Thereafter, I constructed a kichen for KES 12000.00 because I used to cook outside of my house and it was troublesome during rainy days. Therefore, I thought it was wise to build the kitchen. Currently, even if it rains day and night, I have no problem because I have a nice and well covered cooking area. I also bought a table for KES 1650.00 and five plastic chairs for KES 3500.00 because I had no chairs at all. It was shameful to welcome visitors and offer them some pieces of logs to seat on. I am now happy and comfortable welcoming friends to my home because I have some chairs to offer them. Since my children had no bed, I bought them one and a mattress for KES 15500.00. I am now happy seeing them sleeping comfortably, unlike before GiveDirectly aided me. For entertainment and news purposes, I bought a television in a hire-purchase. I paid a deposit of KES 5000.00 and I am paying a daily installment of KES 95.00 for three years. Lastly, I bought 12 buckets of 20 liters each for storing water for KES 1800.00. I did this because fresh water in our area is not reliable. By so doing, it is an assurance of having enough water if all the 12 buckets are full."

"My new goal is to connect tap water to our home. This will ensure that we have readily available water for household use. At the moment, I am forced to walk for a long distance of more than 15 kilometers to get this essential commodity. Furthermore, I am planning to sell them at KES 10 per 20 liters of water to our neighbors to earn an additional income to assist me in meeting my small financial needs."
