"My main challenge is lack of job opportunities here in the village. I was once employed in Mombasa as a shop attendant for one year, but things didn't work out. We disagreed over payment when I asked for a raise on top of 3000 KES I was earning. This is when I decided to came home about two years ago to look for some other things to do. I haven't been lucky so far just riding a motorcycle taxi which earns me about 200 KES a day after paying the bike's owner."

"Receiving this money is a blessing for me. I will use this money to fix my house by buying ironsheets, matress and cement. I sell tomatoes and bananas which bring very little money. With this kind of business I cannot buy all these thinks for my house."

"I have been a boda boda operator for several years. I make a profit of 200 KES a day which is not enough for my needs. This industry has its challenges, but the ones I face are the number of operators increasing and the fuel prices have also gone high, and the prices we charge our customers are the same.
I look back and I realize I have not made any progress in life. I feel stuck. I am not able to marry too because I feel I can not handle the responsibility that comes with having a wife."

"Receiving this money means that at least my husband weight of providing for our small family has been lowered.
He has been working as a motorcycle rider for over 5 years, and we have been able to do so much with savings that they put together with other motorbike riders as a table banking.
Upon receiving the first transfer of 55,000 KSH we plan to finish building a toilet that had stopped for lack of funds, the total cost is around 30,000 KSH.
The rest of the money will be channelled to bring a water project at home, which will be our income generating activities, we plan to sell water to relieve our neighbors from travelling far to get clean water. The whole cost of piping is at 25,000 KSH."

"Receiving this money means self-employment. I work as a motorcycle taxi driver. Despite being in this industry, I do not own a motorcycle. I have to borrow one for me to work. The disadvantage is, the owner takes the bigger percentage of what I make. This leaves me with a tiny amount. I intend to save his money up to 15,000 KES. This amount is enough to buy a motorcycle on higher purchase. With my motorcycle, I will be able to make enough money to sustain my family comfortably."

Mather
received a $279 third payment.
"I used my most recent transfer to buy one bundle of zinc to complete the numbers of zinc bundles I need for the roofing of my house. Secondly, I spend some of my transfer to buy one cartoon of assorted nails for the building. I have been sleeping on a flat mattress in my room. Therefore I spend my balance transfer to buy one thick 32inches mattress. Thanks to Givedirectly for the cash support. I believe that with my transfer from Givedirectly, my living conditions will soon improve."

"The biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving money from GiveDirectly is that we now have a motorcycle that is our source of income as well as something that will always remind us of the assistance we received from GiveDirectly. I was also able to take my remaining child, who hadn't started schooling yet, to school all thanks to GiveDirectly"

"I am a consistent farmer and my husband is a Boda Boda rider, together we are blessed with 2 children, I had a cow before but unfortunately, it died, I never had any other source of milk, this forced me to be buying milk daily which was very expensive yet what I could afford was not enough to feed the children, when I received my transfer I, therefore, bought a dairy cow so that I could reduce the cost of milk thus I used KES 35,000 in purchasing a dairy cow, I then placed KES 10,000 on my saving, finally I used KES 10,000 on foodstuff."

Duncan
received a $484 initial payment.
"I am a motorcycle taxi operator but the work is challenging due to climatic conditions, high competition, and road accidents. Being the main income earner I had to strain so that I could fend for my family. Leaving the house very early in the morning before my children woke up and coming back late at night while they had slept was the norm. I never got time with my children and only got updates on their welfare from their mum, yet we stayed in the same house. I am glad this is not the case anymore because I was able to meet most of the family's needs with the first transfer hence I do not strain. Currently, I rarely go to work on weekends nor do I leave the house early and get back late. I, therefore, have enough time with my children, and they are happy we spend time together. This is the biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving the transfers from Give Directly."
