"Receiving this money will relieve me from the stress I go through when it comes to paying school fees for my son in Secondary School. I have to pay about KES 20,000 at the moment but its is difficult because I do not have a source of income, other than the subsistence farming that I practice. I will spend part of the transfers on school fees and buying a dairy cow that will make me an income from selling milk. I will also be able to start a small business of selling maize and beans here at home. Both these two sources of income will bring me about KES 500 per day. This means that I will be able to meet my daily household needs and use the remaining amount to pay school fees."

"I am a widow with six children. I was married as a fourth wife at a young age to an elderly man. He passed away ten years ago. Doing casual labor on farms and fetching water for other people is what I do for a living. My daily income is approximately 100 KES. Travailing to ensure I provide my children's school fees and meals is the challenge I currently face."

"I was thankful to God after receiving the first transfer. I saw this as an opportunity to see my children compete in their studies as I had been struggling a lot to see their school fees settled. That morning, I had to visit the immediate shopping center since I needed a bank agent shop where I could deposit the money directly to the school account. With the remaining amount, I managed to purchase some household goods as we had agreed with my husband. Everyone in the household was so happy that evening when we meet for a meal, knowing that the great promise we had been given had been finally honored."

"After receiving the first transfer, I spent the first KES 23250 on the construction of a new house. I obtained 25 iron sheets each at KES 750 nails and also paid the labor force at KES 4500. I needed a new and bigger than the only one I am currently having as I already demolished the old kitchen. I also bought three sheep at KES 12000 that I am currently rearing with a plan to see them, reproduce, and earn me some income after selling the young one. with the remaining amount, I also had to pay school fees for my four primary school kids, obtained a new uniform for them at KES 3000, and also obtained foodstuff at KES 2800 since we had not been having enough to keep us for the next two months. I am glad that I managed to sort the most urgent needs in my household and hopeful that I will further accomplish more with the second transfer."

"After the construction and installation of a maize miller that I had been running over the past year, I had been working hard to furnish the interior part as the floors needed to be kept clean. When I received the first transfer, I had only left the floors that were still dusty and could always lead to a great wastage in case of maize spillage. I managed to obtain some bags of cement that I used in the completion of the floor at KES 21000. This business had been useful to me as it has served all my household needs and also paid part of the school fees for my children. With the current maize demand in the area, I saw it good to start a maize selling business in the same room where customers either buy maize or the already packed maize flour. I decided to obtain 5 sacks for the start which was KES14000. I also saw it good to construct an extension that I will later stock with retail goods as my wife needed such a business to be running alongside as an additional source of income. The construction cost has so far been KES 11500 after obtaining 14 iron sheets and paying KES 8000 for the labor force involved. I am grateful for the great support from GiveDirectly as the progress has been amazing."

"After my husband's long illness that he finally succumbed to, I had been struggling alone to ensure that all my six children get all their basic needs and their school fees paid in full to keep them in their schools. This has never been that easier and at one point, I had to bring in a cow from the relative to just keep on my field to provide us with mil and save me the expensive cost that I had been incurring while buying. I had been struggling to make some savings towards buying the same cow but has been so hard since there had been several demands from schools apart from the school fees that I had been trying to raise. I was glad when I received this transfer as I spent KES 36000 to pay back and change the ownership of the cow. With the remaining amount, I spent it on settling school fees for my sons - one in the college, one in secondary school, and the other four currently in primary school. In total, they all needed a total of KES 20000 and I was glad to have been able to raise the amount."

"Receiving the first transfer was a confirmation that the struggles I had been having paying school fees for my children were coming to an end. I was so excited when I first received and confirmed the receipt from GiveDirectly. I was still home with my son that morning as we were planning to join the other members of my family in the neighborhood over the burial ceremony at the neighbor's place. I had to share the news and my son could not hold back his happiness too. we left the house feeling happy as we needed to inform the other members of the family too before planning on the withdrawal dates. I am still grateful that I received this transfer at such a right time when I needed it most."
