"My life is different than it would have been if I never received the transfers in that, I have bought building materials ready to complete the construction that I have started. I do casual jobs in the village and sometimes do tailoring work. The amount of money that I get from this jobs is so small and cannot meet all the basic household items and pay school fees for my children. I could not save even a coin. I used to admire good houses and it was my wish to build one. We live in a small house with my family and the house cannot accommodate us comfortably. When I receive the second transfer I bought the building material and started building a better and spacious house for my family. I am so happy in that I know that we will have a spacious rooms and my children will feel good. GiveDirectly has changed our thinking, given us hope and finally have improved our standard of living. I am so much grateful and very indebted to you."

"At times we are forced to handle some tiresome farming tasks such as weeding farms for our neighbors in an attempt to raise school fees for our children. Unfortunately, the high scarcity of such jobs, as well as poor remunerations, act as the biggest hardship we are facing because we cannot make any savings make savings. At times we use the little we get on purchasing other basic needs rather than paying school fees for our children because we have no other source of income."

"I have four of my children who are in school, two of which are in university and two who are in highschool and the biggest challenge for me as a parent is paying for thier school fees. When I received my second transfers I spent KES 30000 on paying for thier school fees. The remaining amount, I took KES 5000 on paying registration fees for water connection to our home. The remaining amount of KES 18000, I spent equally on buying food for my family and purchasing some clothes for my family members."

"I am so glad that at the moment we have a lactating cow and that we no longer spend money on buying milk for use at home. Without GiveDirectly, I believe this wouldn't be possible for me to have one anytime soon. The clothes which I bought for myself and my children are so smart and we look good in it. At least now we have some new ones which we shall be wearing while attending occasion or church. I had no budget to buy some anytime soon as I was struggling with paying school fees and buying food."

"My desire has been to build a spacious house for my family of 7 but due to financial instability, this dream has never come to pass. Receiving this money means fulling my longtime desire. I am planning to spend 60,000 shillings to construct a 3 room semipermanent house. This is going to enable us leave a decent and comfortable house. Currently, we are staying in a mud walled the house which is full of holes the roof also leaks during rainy seasons. It is always very cold at night because the walls can not prevent cold from reaching us. My children always suffer from coughing and flu due to cold. Other than that, I am planning to spend the remaining part to clear all school fees arrears for my child who is in high school so that he can study without sent home."

"Financial constraints has been my biggest hardship. I have seven children and getting to satisfy their needs is very difficult. This is because of the tough economic times. I construct houses within the village with very little pay. In a month, I get one or two jobs which earn me between 50 to 70 USD. Given the needs that I have ,this money is not enough. This is why my house is not in good condition and I struggle buying food and also getting school fees for my children."

"Receiving this money means a better house and new beddings for my family. Currently, I live in a small and grass-thatched house that is leaking when it is raining which cause shifting of bed at nights. I plan to spend utmost $300 of my first transfer to ensure the house is complete and $200 will cater for the bedding expenses. With my second transfer, I plan to spend $150 to buy 5 goats to start livestock keeping that will act as my long-term investment project. The remaining amount will help me to pay school fees for my children."

"My life is different in that I was able to pay for the school fees for my two children in secondary school which was not easy before. We used to do casual jobs with my spouse in the village and save the little money that we used to get for school fees. Getting this casual jobs was not easy. The amount of money that we get was so small and cannot meet all the basic household needs which was so expensive. This means that the amount we could save for school fees was so little. My children could be sent home from school to collect the money. Due to the fact that I did not have the full amount they could stay home for a quite some time which was Also affecting their performance since lessons were going on. When I received the second transfer I was able to pay all the school fees and my children were not send home. Their performance improved and they are so happy and working hard . I also have peace of mind and I have devoted most of my time on my farm which was not the case before. I am so happy because I am able to plan my own work at home."
