"It rained in our village two days ago. The nearest water pan collected water that will last for two weeks. I can now take bath three times a week unlike five days back. More so the water from the pan is free of charge so I can use the money set aside for buying water with other expenses. The rains brought happiness in my life."

"The biggest difference in my daily life is having the bicycle repaired, which has made things easier to fetch water. My son would struggle to bring enough water for the family without the bicycle because of the distance. I am also grateful because, before the funds, food has been a major challenge for my family, but the funds reduced the number of days would have slept without food. I am pleased to be in this program."

"It was 5 pm and had gone to fetch water. I was ten minutes away from home when I had a message beep on my phone. I stopped for a minute to check the message and was pleased to see that I received the $10.6. I immediately knew that these funds came from GiveDirectly. I walked hastily back at home excited to break the news to my family. My whole family was happy to hear the news, and that’s when I told my mother not to worry about the food for the next two days. I had noticed the whole day she was worried about where to get food for the family. The news was such a relief for her."

"After getting this money, i will invest it in irrigation agriculture. I would like to buy a water pump so that I farm off season with irrigation since the normal rain only destroy our crop. This has been my dream I just didn't have the money to realize it with."

"I spent a huge portion of my second transfer on purchasing building materials which include; bags of cement, sand, and bricks. I purposely bought them to renovate y house by plastering the walls as well as building a new pit latrine. Before then, I have been relieving myself in the bushes which were so unhygienic. For years, we have been suffering from water born diseases such as cholera which was a result of the contaminated water and even air around us. I am hopeful that this shall come to an end which shall equally be a relief to us because we will no longer suffer from these diseases anymore also, it has restored our dignity and self-esteem as a family. Also, I spent $100 to pay tuition fees for my grandson ( in secondary school) who had been sent home two weeks ago because of the arrears. I am glad to see him back to school and waiting for his final exam which is in two months. I am thankful to GiveDirectly for this support because of it was not for them, he would still be at home. With the remaining amount, I bought food for my family of three."

"Ever since I got married here in 2018, I have concentrated on maize farming alone for a lack of capital to extend largely to horticulture. However, I have been yearning to farm tomatoes and watermelons because the profits earned are thrice the expenses incurred. Unfortunately, I have not had the capital to venture into it as the income earned from maize farming all caters for household food. When I receive the transfers, I intend to use KES 50000 to sow butternuts and maize on my 1-acre piece of land and I will be grateful that my family of 7 will be food secure as well as financially stable. In addition, I will pay school fees for my daughter who will be joining grade 9 in January 2023."

"Currently I depend on working in people's farms within the village to provide for my 2 children and wife. I weed their farms or water their plants, and get paid $2 a day and a times I may not get a casual job to feed my family. This affects me since I am not able to save and even buy a cow to help get my family milk."

"At the moment, i am struggling with food. I am old and can't do much. I have to send my grandchildren to do most things for me like going to the maize mill, fetching firewood and water. I make locally brewed alcohol and sell as a source of income. Business is slow and with the high food prices I fail to buy enough. Hence struggling."

"When we receive the transfer we are planning to buy this piece of land at $500 from the owner. Then we'll be able to stay in peace and secure a place for our 6 children. We also intend to buy a 5000 litres water tank at $300, this will enable us to capture and store rain water which means we'll have safe water for drinking. Now, we drink from the nearby river that affects our teeth and weakens the bones."

"Prior to receiving the second transfer, my family of four was living in a small kitchen with no space for my two children to play indoors. We had planned to build a new house, but we could not get started until we received funding from GiveDirectly. After receiving it, I purchased 25 iron sheets for $7.5 each, enough nails for $30, roofing frames and timber for $50, a door and two windows for $80, and labor for $60. Despite the fact that I have yet to repair the doors and windows, I am confident that we will be moving within the next two weeks. In addition, I spent $115 to purchase a large 3000 liter water tank, which has since been collecting clean rainwater. I used to walk two kilometers to get water from a public stream, which put a lot of strain on my injured leg. I was relieved when I received the tank because it reduced my daily workload and allowed my leg to heal."
