"The biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving money from GiveDirectly is that there are developments that couldn't happen before. I was able to get the materials that are to be used to build me a better and proper house, as well as got a motorcycle that is our regular source of income which apart from helping us meet our family's daily immediate needs also helps us with household chores and activities like fetching water. All that could only happen through the assistance I received from GiveDirectly, I am so grateful."

"Receiving this money means that I will get another source of income through keeping a dairy cow. At the moment, I have only one that provides us with milk only for consumption. I, therefore, will buy another one, so that I can sell its milk and spend the money on food and sugar for my family. This will relieve me because I will be able to save money that I make from a motorcycle taxi business. I will spend about KES 40,000 on this and the rest will go to home improvement. I will buy a water tank for storing rainwater that we need for cooking and drinking at about KES 20,000." (Occupation: Motorcycle or bicycle taxi)

"I spent KES 33000 to buy a daily cow. This is because for the longest time, I have wanted to buy one but the daily KES 200 commission that I get from riding a motorcycle taxi is not enough to provide my family and save towards buying a cow. I'm hopeful that in a year or so, the cow would have given birth and I will be able to sell the milk in my neighborhood and earn some income. I spent KES 6600 to buy two chairs and a table to replace the broken ones at home and spend KES 6000 to buy two sacks of maize enough to take us through the drought season. I still have the balance of KES 7400 which I use to cater for daily expenses. I'm so grateful to GiveDirectly for the support." (Occupation: Motorcycle or bicycle taxi)

"I have been planning to buy a motorbike for business purposes. I want to earn money to take care of myself and my family. We have been going through a lot of difficulties in life. When I receive my first and second transfer from GiveDirectly, I withdrew the money and asked my sister to keep it for me. To generate more money and do some savings for the future, I used the money to buy a motorbike for transportation. I spend $950.00USD." (Occupation: Motorcycle or bicycle taxi)

"We used KES 20000 to buy a new stock for a business my husband had engaged in before. This was clothes selling business. He had had to lose all his stock over time because of the hard economic times that we had been through as a family and this was an opportune moment for us to get back to our feet. He now sells his own clothes and makes more profits contrary to before when he used to rely on broking to earn a living. The remaining KES 30000 was used to buy a motorcycle for transporting is clothes luggage to various market destinations and this has made his days in work quite enjoyable and easy. We are very grateful that we are now able to provide for ourselves and on a path towards growth."

"My additional goal is to be able to clear debt awed to me by a motorcycle company that had sold me one of their motorcycle on credit. Once I will be able to clear this debt means that I will be able to use all the money got from motorcycle business and be in a position to meet all my family's need with much ease. This is the only source of income for me and my family currently and I look forward to bettering the living standards of my family with it."

"I spent KES 40,000 to purchase 35 iron sheets, this was for the completion of the construction of my house which I had started with my first transfer. This is because the place where I was previously living was very small to fully accommodate all the family members. Furthermore, I had to seek shelter from the neigh whenever I received important guests which was a very embarrassing scenario." (Occupation: Motorcycle or bicycle taxi)

"My additional goal is to offset all my debts. These include paying off all my children's school fees arrears. Having debts have been stressful to me thus making me not to be at peace. Basically, I have been having an accumulated debts of up to KES 10,000, which I had not been able to settle due to unreliable source of income. I had not fully paid that debt because initially I had a goal of buying a new motorcycle for business. I am glad that from this investment, I have been able to get KES 400 per day. Thanks to GiveDirectly for its kind support." (Occupation: Motorcycle or bicycle taxi)

"Aside from raising the school fees another challenge I face is repaying the loan I took from Watu credit to purchase the motorcycle. I still have an outstanding loan of KES 140000. Normally, we have arrangement where I am required to repay KES 400 per day. Sometimes when business is bad I cannot be able to raise enough to repay for the day and I feel so bad about it. Fuel has also become so expensive and has significantly reduced the profits I make per day. Other times there are wear and tear which also greatly reduces the cash flow. If I default on payment even for a day there is a risk of the motorcycle being returned and that means forfeiting whatever payment I would have made. It is never easy."

"I own a motorcycle that I use in offering taxi services to people in the neighborhood and my new goal at the moment is to start a retail shop business. From the money that I saved from my second transfer, I am planning to use part of it to renovate our current house and use the remaining amount to build a shop. I will then use the money that I will get from the sale of maize at the end of this season to start up this shop by acquiring some stock. With this, I will not depend on one source of income and I will be able to meet our basic needs on time." (Occupation: Motorcycle or bicycle taxi)
