"I have a passion for farming, but this has been hard to do because of the seasonal rains. I want to plant vegetables and make a living out of them. Since I can not depend on rainfall, I will tap water from my neighbors and buy a tank worth $ 150 so I can practice irrigation. The excitement I have for this project is immense because unlike how others go to Lango Baya to buy vegetables for commercial purposes, I will be planting mine in my backyard and selling them."

Kenga
received a $25 second payment.
"I am 84 years old, my wife died ten years ago. We were blessed with one daughter. I am retired, and I depend on my younger brother who sends me $2 a week. Luckily my brother also pays for school feed for my daughter who is in high school and lives with her in town. I stay in an unstable room when it rains, water gets to the house because of the holes in the roof. I have been using Givedirectly transfer to buy food and water. With the current drought, water is scarce and most of the time I can stay up to three days without a bath. A 20-liter jerrican cost $3.5 which is not enough to clean the house and drink. Before the current drought we are experiencing, we were fetching water on the river at no cost. Receiving this transfer has enabled me to purchase water for $10 and food for $20 with no strain"

"I have been visiting different doctors to consult widely about my problem and so I have received a lot of recommendations that I want to work with. Most of them are in favor of medical operation which should cost $300 for the whole process. When I get this money, this is going to be my first project! I know I stand to regain my old life I go down this route. Once done, I will invest the rest of my money on commercial farming through irrigation using the river water that I have at my disposal. This way, I'll be able to create a stream of income for myself."

"I currently face a problem of poverty in that I cannot even afford to buy a cow that can provide us with milk for both home use and selling to make money. I am also affected with land slides and flash floods which makes us live bad life because my house is just next the stream that makes a lot of noise and water reaches the compound when it gets full. In addition, I lack school fees to go back to school because I was admitted at Islamic University in Uganda for a Diploma in Primary Education but I didn't even start due to lack of money. Due to inability to support my family, my wife left for Kenya and left me two children who are now staying with my Uncle."

Kangombe
received a $452 initial payment.
"It was at the nearby water booth where I had gone to fetch water for the family. I received two consecutive message alerts on my phone and immediately I had to return to our house which is just adjacent to the water station. I called my son who confirmed the message and informed me that I had received the transfers from Givedirectly. Joy filled my heart when I learned about the receipt of the transfer because I was sure that the kids who had been sent home for school fees will be able to resume their studies."

received a second payment.
"sell it at the nearby market. I get $7 a month and I use it for food for the family. My husband is seventy-five years, he does not work due to his old age. I have two daughters, both were once married but separated from their husbands and come back home, they leave their children with me as their go to the city for greener pastures. The most challenging thing is paying school fees for my grandchildren because most of the money is used for food and water. Receiving this transfer has enabled me to pay $5 for food, and $10 for food, and bought a goat at $15."

"Lack of enough food to feed the family. Also where I sleep the bedding are bad I easily get a cold in the night.
I also very bad when my two children died because of water. Meshach Simiyu died in May when he had gone to bath in maba water with his friends were he drowned in the water. Also my daughter Nalyaka Solome who was working in Kenya died in swamu water when she was crossing to go to work. I always feel very bad and triggered whenever I remember them.
I am also sick as my bones and my husband's bones are weak and they always hurt him so bad."

"The first thing I want to do is re-open up my retail business which requires about $ 429 so that I can ensure a constant source of income for my family members. I also want to purchase a fresian cow to supply me with milk that I can sell and also give to my family to take. The cow goes for about $ 571. Then am also planning on adding on money from the business to the balance and purchase some land near bubita Market which can go for about $ 1142 as it is not affected by water."

"As you can see, my house is nearly collapsing because it's completely worn out and hasn't been repaired since my husband disappeared. The roof that is made of palm leaves is badly leaking and the walls are equally weak because all the supporting poles are already eaten up by vermin. This is what I want to do with my money. When I receive first transfer, I will connect piped water to my home at $100 because I'll need the it during construction. Thereafter I'm going to build a new one , at least three rooms with iron roof at around $500. If I'll still be remaining with some money, I'll pay school fees for my child who's in polytechnic and has been just getting support from his siblings. I know he's suppose to be my responsibility even though I'm not capable at the moment."
