"Owning livestock is the best saving plan for me in my old age. I cannot do any physical jobs thus looking after my own animals is what I am aspiring to do. I currently have three goats that I acquired through the transfers and I am planning to buy more. My objective is to buy a goat every month and chickens whenever I receive a transfer. My expectation is that they will reproduce and have many of them, I can readily rely on them when I am faced with a financial challenge and even when GiveDirectly phases out, I will still have some assets to rely on."

"We are four individuals in our family who benefit from GiveDirectly's assistance. We didn't have enough food in the house when we just got our transfer. As a result, we each provided $5 before going on to buy food for the rest of our household. I'm currently in my second year of secondary school, however, my dad, who pays for my tuition, occasionally feels overburdened. My mother died when I was still a child, leaving my father, who works occasionally on construction sites, to take care of my siblings and me. He does not frequently receive work, and occasionally he waits weeks for one. It has been difficult for him because of this to make on-time tuition payments for me. Therefore, I made a payment of $34 to the school to cover the arrears I owed, and I still have $20 in savings for this year's tuition. I invested $2 per chicken in three of them to increase our household income. I'm hoping to sell some of them in the future after they will have reproduced in order to pay for some of my personal care items and raise money for my school expenses. I spent the final $3 on personal care items. I'm delighted we joined the program since it has made our lives better. When I get my transfers for this month, I'll use them to pay for this year's school expenses, so I can help my dad catch up on his payments."

"While I burn charcoal for sale, my husband works any odd jobs he may find in the village. The majority of the time, we rely on him, but his work is unreliable because he occasionally goes for weeks without working. The amount I make, on the other hand, is $3 every two weeks. We occasionally find it difficult to provide for the needs of our four children due to our poor income. Three of them, who are currently in primary school, owed the school $20 in arrears, so they were unable to take the end-of-year exam until they paid it. In order to pay the arrears when I obtained my transfer, I did so by paying $20 in school. I spent $34 on food items including chicken, wheat flour, rice, and groceries so that my family could celebrate Christmas as they have always wished. Anyone who looked at my kids could tell they were content and enthusiastic because of the smiles on their faces. They had never celebrated Christmas with such joy as they did this year. I felt gratified as a parent to see my kids content and happy. With the $14 left over, I bought five packets of cornmeal and several detergents."

"I normally rely on casual jobs and farming which help me earn an income that caters to my needs and those of my children. It's barely enough though to care for all our needs. My husband does casual jobs as well although outside of our village. We have seven kids. Upon receipt of my cash transfer, I spent $25 to buy chicken that I rear for business as well as for them to provide us with eggs for home consumption. I spent $55 to purchase a bag of maize, and $50 was spent to purchase a goat. This would have been tough to do because of financial constraints. I am happy to have been able to boost my income through the cash transfer."

"Currently, our main challenge is poverty where by we do not have enough money to make our lives better for example constructing a bigger house. Our house is really small and it's so uncomfortable since we end up sharing it with our chicken birds and the calf in the back room. Also another challenge is the fast flowing water especially in the rainy season where water comes from up hill, and carries large sums of mud. This destroys the crops that we plant and this ends up leaving us with less food. When it comes to such month the like January where its dry, there is scarcity of food so it becomes hard to get full meals and we end up surviving on only one meal a day."

"I am living my bonus years on earth currently and this transfer would mean a decent living for me. Since I have been depending on my grandchildren to fend for me, I will have the opportunity to provide for myself hence reducing the burden on them. I plan on purchasing chicken and goats to rear for resale. This will ensure I have a sustainable source of income and enough money to purchase food. At the same time, I will use the transfers to seek proper medication for myself. I am thankful as the transfers will enable me to lead a happy better life and educate one of my grandchildren."

"I used my initial transfer of $100 to purchase two goats, one for $60 and the younger one for $40. In addition to the native breeds I already had, I needed better ones. I have been milking one of the freshly acquired goats, and I am happy to report that it has been giving my family of four at least a cup of nutritious milk each day. In addition, I spent $55 for a sack of maize that my son, who recently got married and moved into a new home, and I split in half. In addition, I spent $5 on two chickens that will soon start laying eggs. I also used some of the remaining money to celebrate Christmas with my kids and to pay off some debt at local stores. As a single mother, I am pleased with the advancements I have made thanks to GiveDirectly. I am grateful for the current helping hand because raising my children alone has been difficult."

On viewing, I realized that I had received money from GiveDirectly. I was overcome with happiness at such support that changes our lives."

"I am a single parent surviving on casual jobs such as burning and selling charcoal which does not pay much. The transfer so far has been helpful to me, I have been able to pay fees on time for my son. My goal is that through the monthly transfers, I will be able to better my life and that of my son. My plan is to see him excel in his academics as he is joining high school and I am hopeful that he will continue with his studies without interruptions concerning fees. Apart from school, I am also planning to buy more livestock like chickens and goats. I currently have 6 chickens and 1 goat. Since casual jobs are unreliable, this livestock will greatly help me as they multiply. I will sell the offspring and raise money to cater for my future financial needs like fees for my son."
